    • A locking element is configured to be used with a polyaxial bone anchor, and is substantially cylindrical with a bottom side facing a head of the bone anchor, a top side opposite to the bottom side, and a surface portion with an external thread. The locking element has a first recess at the bottom side for accommodating at least a portion of the head, and a second recess at the top side for engagement with a driver. The second recess is located outside the center of the top side. The head has a portion with a largest diameter, and a first level L1 is defined by the highest point of a circle with the largest diameter drawn around the head, and a second level L2 is defined by the bottom of the second recess, L2 being at a level not higher than L1.

    • The present invention relates to a surgical instrument for a technique for attaching bone fragments using a cannulated screw, the implantation of which is guided by a pin. The instrument (1) comprises: (i) a central channel (5) defining a longitudinal axis (6), enabling the slidable and rotatable insertion of said instrument (1) onto said guide pin; (ii) a nesting structure (15) suitable for being inserted into a recess made in the head of said cannulated screw and for blocking the rotation thereof; (iii) cutting edges (20, 21) suitable for boring at least one of said bone fragments by rotating said surgical instrument (1) about said longitudinal axis (6); and (iv) a means (11) for gauging the insertion depth of said guide pin in said bone fragments. Said instrument (1), which is conveniently inserted onto said guide pin and rotatably moved, enables either the boring of at least one of the bone fragments by means of said cutting edges (20, 21), or the screwing of said cannulated screw, inserted onto said guide pin, by engaging with said nesting structure (15).

    • A spinal facet bone screw and minimally invasive surgical method of implanting a facet screw to stabilize the spine are provided. The facet screw includes an elongated body portion having a head, a threaded portion and a distal threadless portion. A pair of flutes formed in the elongated body extends from the distal end across the threadless portion and into the distal end of the threaded portion. The flute creates a self-tapping cutting surface that includes a heel edge that is curved with respect to the outer surface. The method of implantation comprises making a minimally invasive incision on the side of the midline contralateral to the target facet joint and delivering the screw across the interspinous process using the adjacent spinous processes as guideposts. The facet screw system fixes juxtaposed facet articular processes to enhance spinal fusion and stability and the method provides for accurate, repeatable and easy implantation.
