    • A method and system for alerting a driver of a commercial vehicle or private vehicle, such as a truck or automobile, of an approaching emergency vehicle, such as a police or fire vehicle, and vice versa. The system includes a navigation information system in each vehicle, a transmitter in the second vehicle, a receiver in the first vehicle, a processing system, and a warning system in the first vehicle. Each navigation information system provides data that describe the geographic position and speed of the vehicle. The receiver in the first vehicle receives the navigation information transmitted by the second vehicle. The processor and associated electronics in the first vehicle determines the position and direction of travel of the second vehicle relative to the first vehicle. The warning system in the first vehicle provides a suitable indication to alert the driver if it is determined that the two vehicles are likely to collide.

    • A method and apparatus are provided for detecting handling damage in a direct access storage device (DASD). The DASD has at least one disk mounted for rotation and a transducer mounted for movement across tracks recorded on the at least one disk. Each of the tracks being divided into a plurality of sectors. A handling damage analysis test is performed within a predetermined damage zone on the at least one disk. Test results from the handling damage analysis test are compared with at least one threshold value. An error code is outputted responsive to compared test results being greater than the at least one threshold value. A microcode routine is stored in a random access memory (RAM) in the DASD. The microcode routine is performed for detecting handling damage in the direct access storage device (DASD) upon installation. An error code is outputted to a host interface responsive to compared test results greater than a threshold value.

    • A method of burnishing a rear pad of a slider within a disk drive. The rear pad is formed of a burnishable material and maintains elements for reading and writing. The disk drive further includes a spindle motor rotatably driving a disk and an actuator assembly positioning the slider over a surface of the disk. With this in mind, the method includes rotating the disk. The slider is moved in a radial fashion relative to the disk surface in a reciprocal fashion, causing the rear pad to rock. As the rear pad rocks, contact between the rear pad and the disk surface burnishes the rear pad. As a result, a positive camber is imparted in the rear pad relative to the MR element. The above-described method can be practiced following initial manufacture of the disk drive, or at various times over the life of the disk drive. Regardless, the method is practiced in-situ and is therefore very fast, cheap, and adapts quickly to the particular disk in which the slider is flying.

    • In a first aspect, a method of operating a disk drive includes detecting a trigger event during non-idle operation of the disk drive, and responding to the detected trigger event by performing a predictive failure analysis with respect to the disk drive. According to a second aspect, a method of operating a disk drive includes performing a predictive failure analysis with respect to the disk drive at a regular time interval, detecting a trigger event during non-idle operation of the disk drive, and responding to the detected trigger event by reducing the regular time interval at which the predictive failure analysis is performed. Numerous other aspects are provided.

    • A method, apparatus and computer program product are provided for head crash predictive failure analysis based upon slider track misregistration measurement using the readback signal. A transducer head is selected. Then the transducer head is positioned off-track. A readback signal is obtained from the transducer head positioned off-track. The readback signal is processed and compared with historical values to identify head disk interference. The processing of the readback signal includes amplifying the readback signal using arm electronics. The amplified readback signal is demodulated to provide a demodulated signal that is proportional to its amplitude. The demodulated signal is bandpass filtered using a bandpass filter having a selected center frequency for the selected transducer head.
