    • Inclusions in a transparent panel (5) are detected by placing a light transmissive interface (3) in contact with the panel (5), and transmitting a beam of light (1) through interface (3) into panel (5). Within the panel (5), the light beam (7) propagates along a path including total internal reflections at surfaces of panel (5). When the light beam (1) intercepts inclusions (10) or other defects at least some of it is scattered, and leaves the panel (5). This scattered light is then observed. Thus, a large zone of the panel (5) can be inspected, with light only being detected in the case that it arises from scattering by inclusions or other defects.

    • In one example, this invention presents a method of providing the same self-service content that is available on the web interface to users contacting by telephone, knowing that the web and telephone are fundamentally different user interfaces. In one embodiment, this seeks to protect the general idea of how to playback web data in real-time to the user over the speech interface. For this purpose, a method is presented comprising of the general steps through which the web data is initially sent to an automatic transformation module. Then, that transformation module refines or re-structures the web data to make it suitable for the speech interface. The algorithm in the module is predicated on the user interface principles of cognitive complexity and limitations on short term memory based on which FAQ types are classified into one of the following four classes: simple, medium, complex, and complex-complex.

    • A winch for opening and closing an umbrella includes a winch drum mounted within an elongate support tube of the umbrella, to rotate about a longitudinal axis thereof. A threaded shaft is coaxial and rotationally fast with the drum. A line is fixed at one end to the drum and at other end to a sleeve, to which struts are pivotally connected, each strut being associated with a canopy-supporting rib. A travelling nut is engaged with the threaded shaft and blocked for rotation relative to the tube. A guide is fixed to the nut for guiding the line onto the drum, and a motor is also enclosed in the support tube and drivingly connected to the winch drum.

    • A helical electrodeionization apparatus is adapted to purify aqueous liquids to effect the production of high purity water. An insulated net-separating wall is positioned between a pair of anion and cation exchange membranes to form a special membrane bag type flow unit I, each flow unit I is linked up with a group of slots on the side walls of central pipe, and is rolled up to form cylinder structure which centers on central pipe as the helical axis, a conductive crust is formed by winding metal strip or wire outside the cylinder. Ion exchange resin is filled up between the adjacent membrane bags to form flow unit II. The present invention has less pressure drop and needs less power, and is suited to multiple-device series operation. Preferably, daily maintenance and renewal of the resin is convenient, and production cost is lower.
