    • The invention is to provide liquid crystalline compounds having a negative and extremely large dielectric anisotropy value and a small optical anisotropy value at the same time; liquid crystal compositions comprising the compound; and liquid crystal display devices fabricated by using the liquid crystal composition; the liquid crystalline compounds have 2,3-dihalogenophenylene moiety and are expressed by formula (1) wherein Ra and Rb each independently represents a linear or branched alkyl having 1 to 10 carbon, any methylene in the alkyl may be replaced by —O—, —S—, —CH═CH—, or —C≡C—, but —O— is not successive, and any hydrogen in the alkyl may be replaced by halogen; rings A1 to A4 each independently represents trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, cyclohexene-1,4-diyl, pyridine-1,4-diyl, pyrimidine-2,5-diyl, or 1,4-phenylene, wherein at least one hydrogen in these rings may be replaced by halogen, and any nonadjacent methylene in cyclohexane ring may be replaced by —O—; Y1 and Y2 each independently represents F or Cl; Z1, Z2 and Z3 each independently represents a single bond, —CH2CH2—, —(CH2)4—, —COO—, —OCO—, —CH2O—, —OCH2—, —CF2O—, or —OCF2—; and l, m and n each independently is 0, 1 or 2, and the sum of l+m+n is 3 and less.

    • Provided are liquid crystalline compounds having a wide liquid crystal phase temperature range, low viscosity, a large elastic constant ratio K33/K11 and excellent solubility at low temperature, a liquid crystal composition using the same and a liquid crystal display. Preferred compounds are difluorovinyl compounds represented by Formula (1): wherein Y1, represents H or a straight chain or branched alkyl group having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, and optional —CH2— in the above alkyl group may be replaced by —O— or —CH═CH—, but —O— is not adjacent to each other, and at least one H in Y1 may be substituted with halogen or a cyano group: A1, A2, A3 and A4 each independently represent 1,4-cyclohexylene in which optional —CH2— which is not adjacent to each other may be replaced by —O—, 1,4-phenylene in which optional H may be substituted with halogen, and a single bond, in which at least two of A1, A2, A3 and A4 have the ring structure described above, and at least one of them is 1,4-cyclohexylene in which —CH2— is replaced by —O—; Z1, Z2 and Z3 each independently represent a single bond, —(CH2)2—, —CH═CH—, —(CH2)4—, —O(CH2)3— or —(CH2)3O—; n represents 0 or an integer of 1 to 10, provided that when any of A1, A2, A3 and A4 is 1,4-phenylene, Z1, Z2 and Z3 are single bonds, and among them, when A1 is 1,3-dioxane-2,5-diyl and A2 is 1,4-phenylene and when A3 is 1,4-cyclohexylene and A4 is a single bond, Y1 is H, and n is not 0.

    • Liquid crystal compositions having a small value of .gamma. (V.sub.10 /V.sub.90) and a small .tau. (fast response speed) in order to cope especially with high speed response, while satisfying various characteristics required of STN display mode.
