    • Extended colorant sets are used to hide data or provide a watermark in printed images. Extended set colorants are colorants other than, and in addition to, the standard or common subtractive primary colorants: cyan, magenta, yellow and/or black. Where the extended colorant set supports a plurality of colorant recipes for rendering a given color, watermark data is used to select a colorant recipe from the plurality. As the watermark data to be encoded in the image changes state with image position, alternate colorant recipes or colorant selection functions are selected. The image is rendered based on the alternate colorant recipe selections. Watermark information is encoded in the colorant recipe or colorant selection function selection. Use of the extended colorant sets allows information to be encoded even in portions of an image having colors that do not include a neutral component.

    • Disclosed herein is a method and apparatus for moiré-free color halftone printing with up to four color image separations. The method and apparatus utilize a plurality of non-orthogonal halftone screens to produce outputs that are moiré free and form uniform periodic rosettes. The method and apparatus provide for defining a first and a second color halftone screen fundamental frequency vector for each of three halftone screens such that the halftone screen set output forms uniform hexagonal rosettes; then defining a fourth color halftone screen where a first fundamental vector of the fourth screen shares a fundamental frequency vector with one of said three halftone screens and a second fundamental frequency vector of the fourth screen shares a fundamental frequency vector with a different one of said three color halftone screens.

    • An adaptive image enhancement filter includes a template matching module for comparing an observed pixel pattern comprising a target pixel and one or more neighboring pixels to a set of templates to determine if the observed pixel pattern matches any of the templates. The template matching module generates a match identifier signal indicating which of the templates, if any, the observed pixel pattern is found to match. Based on this match identifier, a signal generation module provides an enhanced output signal for the target pixel. The template matching and/or the signal generation modules can be independently modified to adapt to changing conditions as identified by signals identifying image attributes and marking process attributes.
