A system that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a data switch having a controller element to transmit telemetry data representative of bandwidth usage by one or more users of the data switch. At least one higher bandwidth user can have an increased polling frequency based at least in part on a differential in upstream and downstream data transfer rates for the one or more users. Additional embodiments are disclosed.

An optimal website is selected and the mobile communications device requests content from that website instead.

One table includes entries for low priority network traffic and the other table includes entries for high priority network traffic. The code also enforces limits on processor cycles used for maintenance of the tables, receives a packet of a first network traffic type, determines the first packet is low priority traffic based upon the packet being of a first network traffic type, adds an entry to the low priority table, and removes the entry from the low priority table after a first timeout interval and a second entry from the second network address translation table after a second timeout interval.

摘要： Devices and methods are disclosed which provide a mobile communications device with multiple methods of wireless communication which can use one method, such as WiFi, to connect to an independent wireless access point while using another method, such as cellular, to verify the security of the wireless access point. The wireless access point provides two SSID's: one private SSID, which is usually encrypted to prevent access, and one public SSID, which is open to any mobile communications device. The mobile communications device connects to the public SSID and downloads a digital certificate. The mobile communications device then uses its cellular connection to verify the authenticity of the digital certificate with its service provider. If verified, the mobile communications device can make use of the wireless access point.

Registration logics onboard mobile communications devices collect network data as they roam inside and outside of their home cellular network. The registration logic sends this data to a registry in the form of a data message. The registry is updated by each instance of a received message. The aggregation of this data allows the system to adaptively learn about network availability in geographic locations. The data collected may also assist in the recovery of lost or stolen phones since the phone location is frequently updated.

The volume level of data traffic is monitored for a plurality of users to select any users with high-bandwidth usage. The time of day and the day of the week may be considered when determining whether a user is a high-bandwidth user. Upon selecting a user as one with high-bandwidth usage, such user may be subject to packet inspections of data traffic streams. In some embodiments, content identification parameters or watermarks are added to one or more packets in a data traffic stream carrying multimedia content.
