    • A process and an apparatus are described for treatment of a gas containing hydrogen sulphide and sulphur dioxide, for example a Claus plant tail gas, in which the gas is brought into contact with an organic solvent (1) e.g. polyethylene glycol 400, containing a catalyst e.g. sodium salicylate, in at least one gas-liquid reactor-contactor (2) and a gas (20) substantially no longer containing hydrogen sulphide and sulphur dioxide is recovered. A single-phase solution (4) of solvent and sulphur is extracted from the reactor-contactor and a portion is cooled in at least one cooling zone (8) to obtain a suspension of sulphur crystals in the solvent, the crystallised sulphur is separated from the solvent in a separation zone (10), the sulphur-depleted solvent (14, 15) is recovered and recycled at least in part to the reactor-contactor (2), and the sulphur (13) is recovered.

    • A pretensioner for a vehicle safety restraint, for rapidly reducing slack in a safety restraint belt in the event of a crash situation, the pretensioner comprising a cable (1) connected at one end to a piston (3) at its other end to a belt rewinding mechanism, the piston (3) being slidably moveable in a cylinder (4) under action of pressure from a gas generator (15) sensitive to a crash indicator, wherein means (5) are provided for controlling the rate of acceleration of the cable (1) in the pretensioning direction, in dependence upon the condition of tension in the safety restraint belt which is to be pretensioned. This can be effected by blocking holes in a dividing plate or by using a continuously variable throttle arrangement such as a profiled throttle pin or a hollow space in the piston with a restrictable opening. The invention allows pretensioning forces to be automatically tailored to the requirements at the time of the crash and as a result provides more comfort to the vehicle occupant while maintaining the required strict safety standards.

    • A portable radio transceiver has a gallium arsenide depletion mode n-channel field-effect transistor as the transmitter power supply amplifier which needs a negative supply applied to its gate to establish the correct working point. A positive power supply provides the power input to the gallium arsenide transistor and a high side switch in the form of a PMOS enhancement mode transistor is used to switch the transmitter on and off. The negative supply is also used to forward bias the gate of the PMOS transistor when conducting so as to reduce its forward conduction resistance thereby enabling a smaller transistor to be used which can be integrated with other low power devices used by the transceiver.
