    • Manufacture of a liquid crystal display is disclosed. The liquid crystal display includes a backlight unit, a backlight unit-side polarizing plate, and a liquid crystal cell held by two glass plates, the liquid crystal cell having an electrode, a liquid crystal layer, an alignment layer, and a color filter arranged between the glass plates. The liquid crystal display also includes a transparent front plate arranged at a side of the liquid crystal cell opposite to the backlight unit, a polarizing plate attached to the liquid crystal cell, and a transparent organic medium layer arranged between the front plate and the liquid crystal cell. Since the front plate is provided at the outermost surface of an image display portion, and the transparent organic medium is filled between the front plate and the liquid crystal module, it is possible to achieve an improvement in wear resistance and a reduction in reflectance.

    • A liquid crystal display apparatus includes a pair of substrates, a liquid crystal layer arranged therebetween, a plurality of electrodes formed on one substrate for applying an electric field substantially in parallel to a face of the substrate, a plurality of active elements connected to the electrodes, and an alignment control layer formed on a face of at least one of the substrates and being in contact with said liquid crystal layer. A surface of the alignment control layer which is in contact with the liquid crystal layer has stepped difference portions, and a ratio a/d between a height of a maximum one of the stepped difference portions and a maximum thickness d of said liquid crystal layer has a range of 0.02-1. The alignment control film is made from a polyamic acid obtained by reacting a diamine with an acid anhydride of 1,2,3,4-cycle butane-tetracarboxylic acid dianhydrides.

    • It is an object to provide a liquid crystal display which reduces unsatisfactory display caused by distorted initial alignment direction in a liquid crystal alignment layer for IPS type displays, realizes stable liquid crystal alignment, is high in mass-productivity, and produces high-quality images of increased contrast ratio. The liquid crystal display contains alignment layers 109 placed between a pair of substrates 101 and 102, at least one of which is transparent, liquid crystal layer 110′ sealed between the alignment layers, common electrode 103 and source electrode 105 for applying an electrical field to the liquid crystal layer, thin-film transistors connected to each of these electrodes, polarizer plate 114 provided on at least one of the substrates, wherein at least one of the alignment layers 109 is composed of a photo-reactive polyimide and/or polyamic acid which can be provided with a liquid crystal alignment capacity by being irradiated with essentially linearly polarized light.
