    • A magnetic recording medium includes a nonmagnetic substrate on which is provided at least a soft magnetic under-film, an orientation control film that controls an orientation of a film directly above, a perpendicular magnetic recording film having an axis of easy magnetization oriented to be mainly perpendicular to the substrate and a protective film, wherein the orientation control film is alloy containing at least Cr and C. The magnetic recording medium is manufactured by a method including carrying out, in order, at least a step of forming a soft magnetic under-film on a nonmagnetic substrate, a step of forming an orientation control film that controls an orientation of a film directly above, a step of forming a perpendicular magnetic recording film having an axis of easy magnetization oriented to be mainly perpendicular to the substrate, and a step of forming a protective film. A magnetic recording and reproduction apparatus includes the magnetic recording medium and a magnetic head that records and reproduces information on the magnetic recording medium, wherein the magnetic head is a magnetic monopole head.

    • A pair of filtering membranes are solidly bonded to a membrane-supporting plate by fusibly bonding each of the filtering membranes to the resin membrane-supporting plate. A main fusible domain is formed along peripheral edges of each of the filtering membranes. This in turn effectively minimizes frictional force between the filtration membrane cartridge and the gutter to enable the operator to easily insert and remove the filtration membrane cartridge into and from the gutter of the slit plate.

    • A programmable external storage control apparatus, including a buffer for temporarily storing data to be transferred between a host and an external storage, which stores a program for controlling data transfer between the host and the external storage and controls the data transfer between the host and the external storage by reading the data transfer control program from the buffer and executing it. The apparatus further includes a microprocessor that responds to a command from the host by starting the control of the data transfer by reading the data transfer control program.
