    • An improved power fluid driven turbo pump is provided for pumping oil wells of the type having, from time-to-time, significant quantities of gas included in the oil so that wide variations in the density of the medium to be pumped may be expected to be encountered. Two separate pumping units driven by the same power fluid are employed, one of which is designed to efficiently compress and pump gas, and the other is designed to efficiently pump normal density fluids. Since the pumps are disposed in series, the combined efficiency of the pumps is substantially unchanged due to changes in density of the fluid to be pumped and remains at a uniformly high level.

    • This invention provides an improved jet pump having a Venturi chamber defined by a coating of a ceramic or alloy material that is highly resistant to both stress and erosion. The coating is applied by the chemical vapor technique upon a heated substrate of graphite. The graphite is then removed to conform in configuration to that of the coating and reduce the graphite substrate to a thickness of less than 0.010 inches. A mass of low melting, high elastic modulus material is then cast around the graphite substrate with the coating adhered thereto to define an exterior cylindrical configuration. The cylindrical mass is then encased by heat shrinking within a jacket of steel or other similar low modulus, high tensile strength material so as to produce a significant compressive force in the coating.

    • While in a well, a downhole turbo-machine of a series of turbine stages and pump stages is driven by power fluid circulated into the turbine stages from the surface. A branch stream from the power fluid passes through a centrifugal cleaner and is cleansed of solid material. The turbine stages drive the centrifugal cleaner. The cleansed stream becomes lubricant for the turbo-machine bearings. On the turbine side, the lubricant stream passes at substantially cleaner discharge pressure into longitudinal passages between turbine shrouds and an alignment tube to journal bearings and journals located between turbine stage stators and a drive shaft driven by the turbines. Annular channels between separate shrouds effect communication between the longitudinal passages between the shrouds and the alignment tube. On the pump side, the lubricant stream is first directed so that it can act on a thrust bearing runner and apply a force in opposition to an otherwise unbalanced axial force. A low pressure discharge from the thrust bearing runner supplies galleries that feed journal and journal bearings of the pump stage stators. Gallery pressure is maintained positive with respect to the pump stage bearings by a feed to the gallery in excess of bleed-out of the bearings. A check valve relieves any excess gallery pressure to that of the next to the last turbine stage fluid passage. Lubricant bleeds from the journals and journal bearings into the fluid stream passing through the turbine pumps.

    • A check valve apparatus is provided for high volume fluid conduits such as a casing string of an oil well. In order to maximize the fluid delivered from the well, it is essential that the restrictions imposed on the fluid flow path by necessary components in the casing string, such as a standing check valve, provide as little as possible interference with the flow area. This invention provides a valving arrangement including longitudinally extending, separated, parallel fluid inlet and outlet passages interconnected by a plurality of ball valve chambers, with each chamber defining a transverse ball seat and containing a ball cooperating with such seat. The fluid area of the inlet passage decreases from the first chamber to the last in the direction of fluid flow while the fluid area of the outlet passage increases from the first chamber to the last, so that the total fluid area passage through the plurality of valves in their open position is maximized.

    • A pitot pump separates a two-phase fluid from a source into a clean, lighter phase and a dirty, heavier phase by subjecting them to a centrifugal force field in a rotating chamber. A small radius pitot tap of the pump draws some of the lightest phase from the chamber to provide the power fluid that drives a jet pump. The jet pump aspirates dirty fluid of the heavier phase that has accumulated in the casing of the pitot pump. Cyclones separate solids of the heavier phase from liquid in the discharge of the jet pump. Concentrated solids from the cyclones in a liquid carrier discharge into mud pots. A cleansed liquid stream leaving the cyclones recycles back into the inlet of the pitot pump, or, is taken off as a clean low pressure stream.

    • An operating mechanism for opening and closing the movable contacts of a load break pressure contact switch which is operable from a side of a switch enclosure and has an optional door safety interlock. The operating mechanism comprises a main shaft with a handle attached thereto for rotating the shaft in opposite directions between switch-open and switch-closed positions. An operating lever which is connected to the movable switch contacts is driven by an overcenter toggle spring means which is operated by the main shaft through a lost motion connection mechanism. An optional interlock is provided for the switch enclosure access door and includes a latch to hold the access door closed when the switch contacts are in their closed position and a mechanism to prevent movement of the switch contacts to their closed position when the access door is open. The interlock is operatively actuatable through cam surfaces and stop surfaces on the lost motion connection mechanism. An override for the door latch allows the access door to be opened while the switch contacts remain closed.

    • A jet pump has a nozzle for a power fluid, a Venturi for the power fluid and a well fluid, and a passage for the well fluid radially outside the Venturi and into the discharge of the nozzle. The power fluid aspirates the well fluid and the combined stream enters the Venturi. The Venturi is ceramic for erosion control. A shell sheaths the ceramic throughout its length and loads the ceramic compressively to provide a compressive preload on it. This preload opposes radial, outward acting stress in the Venturi arising from a greater fluid pressure within the Venturi than the fluid pressure outside it. The preload also produces a friction lock to keep the Venturi from sliding out of the shell because of an axial pressure differential.

    • A vortex jet pump is provided in which circumferential flow in a fluid flow passage through the pump is induced by a tangential power liquid jet inlet into the passage between its suction inlet and its outlet. The pump, which has no moving parts, has a housing providing a fluid flow passage between a pumped fluid suction inlet and a pumped fluid outlet downstream therefrom. Downstream from the power liquid jet inlet there is a throat in the passage having a flow cross section less than the flow cross section of the passage adjacent the power inlet jet inlet. A diffuser section is provided in the passage downstream from the throat and includes means for converting primarily circumferential fluid flow to primarily axial fluid flow in the passage. Preferably such means comprises fixed vanes in the passage downstream for the power liquid let inlet. Means are provided upstream from the power liquid jet inlet for injecting fluid into the passage in a primarily tangential direction for initiating circumferential flow in the passage. The velocity head of the injected fluid is less than the velocity head of the power liquid injected through the jet inlet to minimize cavitation.
