    • Methods and apparatus are disclosed that enables a plurality of users of portable computing devices to each individually request and receive wait-time indications for each of a plurality of attractions within a physical establishment. In certain embodiments the attractions are rides and the physical establishments are amusement parks. In this way, users of portable computing device, such as mobile phones, may individually request and receive wait-time indications for each of a plurality of rides within at least one of a plurality of amusement parks. The methods and apparatus may be configured to maintain and access a database of wait-time values for a plurality of attractions within one or more physical establishments. In certain embodiments, request messages are received as SMS text messages from mobile phone and response messages are sent as SMS text messages to mobile phones.

    • A system, method, and computer program product for automatically providing reading place-markers to a user reading a textual document upon an electronic display. A gaze-tracking element monitors a user's gaze while he or she reads the textual document and determines a look-away event. In response to a look-away event, the system automatically provides a reading place-marker by accentuating an area at or near where the user looked away from the text. In this way the user may more easily return to the location at which he or she ceased reading. In some embodiments the place-marker is automatically removed upon determination that the user's gaze has returned to the marked location within the text. In some such embodiments the reading-place marker is removed in response to the user resuming a characteristic reading gaze motion at or near the marked location. In this way the marker is removed when no longer needed.

    • A system is provided for generating animated self-portraits of a user that depict lifelike simulated behaviors under computer control. A processor controlled camera captures a plurality of self-portrait photographs of a user, each photograph depicting the user in one a plurality of different facial poses, for example different facial angles, eye-gaze directions, and facial expressions. An image database stores the photographs indexed with respect to the particular facial pose depicted. Processor implemented software routines access the image database such that a plurality of particular sequences of indexed photographs is selected and displayed in rapid succession. An animated self-portrait is therefore displayed that depicts a particular simulated facial behavior associated with each particular sequence. By sequencing the images appropriately, the animated self-portrait of a user is made to appear to look around in various directions, nod, yawn, speak or sing along with computer generated vocalizations, wink, blink, and vary facial expressions.

    • An automobile-to-automobile instant-messaging system that enables a user of a first automobile to selectively send a communicative message to a user of a second automobile, the communicative message being addressed to the second automobile based at least in part upon its location with respect to the first automobile.     • A method and apparatus for shaping force signals for a force feedback device. A source wave is provided and is defined by a set of control parameters (including a steady state magnitude, a frequency value and a duration value) and modified by a set of impulse parameters (including an impulse magnitude, and a settle time representing a time required for the impulse magnitude to change to the steady-state magnitude). Optionally, application parameters specifying a direction of force signal and trigger parameters specifying activating buttons can also be provided for the source wave. Using a host processor or a local processor, the force signal is formed from the source wave and the sets of control parameters and impulse parameters, where the force signal includes an impulse signal followed by a continual steady-state signal after an expiration of the settle time. A feel sensation is generated to a user of the force feedback device as physical forces produced by actuators on the force feedback device in response to the force signal. The steady-state magnitude value is lower than a magnitude value of a non-impulse-shaped force signal required to create a corresponding feel sensation having a similar apparent sensation to the user.

    • A haptic feedback device including a fluid viscosity-controlled brake that outputs high forces to the device user at low cost while maintaining inherent safety. An interface device includes a manipulandum physically contacted by the user. A sensor senses a position of the manipulandum and outputs a sensor signal. The interface device also includes a brake including a field-controlled fluid having a viscosity that can be controlled by controlling an electric current in a coil, where a resistive force or drag on the manipulandum is controlled by controlling the fluid's viscosity. The fluid can be an electrorheological fluid controlled by an electric field or a magnetorheological fluid controlled by a magnetic field. In one preferred embodiment, the resistive force is controlled by adjusting a degree of contact of the brake with the manipulandum based on the fluid's viscosity. Disclosed embodiments include fishing devices, bicycle simulators, and control knobs.
