    • In a first display mode, only the information in a first sub-area (W1) of the display screen of a bi-stable matrix display (100) has to be updated. In a second display mode, the information in a second sub-area (W2) of the display screen has to be updated. The information in the first sub-area (W1) is displayed using optical states which require first drive voltage waveforms (DV1) having a maximum duration equal to a first image update period (IUP1). The information in the second area (W2) is displayed using optical states which require second drive voltage waveforms (DV2) having a maximum duration equal to a second image update period (IUP2). The optical states allowed to be used during the first mode are selected to obtain a first image update period (IUP1) which is shorter than the second image update period (IUP2). In this manner, the refresh rate of the information in the first area (W1) is higher than the refresh rate in the second area (W2).

    • A display device (1) has electrophoretic particles (8, 9), a display element including electrodes (5, 6), between which a portion of the electrophoretic particles (8, 9) is present, a temperature sensor (25) and a processor (15) for supplying a driving pulse (32) to the electrodes (5, 6) to bring the display element to a predetermined black, gray or white state, corresponding to the image information to be displayed. For improved grayscale accuracy and optimal picture and text quality, the processor (15) is further arranged to supply pre-pulses (31) preceding the driving pulses (32). The energy of the pre-pulses (31) is increased with increased temperature measured by the temperature sensor (25) and is sufficient to release the electrophoretic particles at a first position near one of the two electrodes (5, 6), but too low to enable the particles to reach a second position near the other electrode (5 or 6).

    • A bistable display device comprises a first substrate (22) carrying, on one side, a plurality of electrode segments (28, 30) and supply lines (26) connecting to the segments. The electrode segments comprise a first set of electrode segments (30) which define the display regions for providing information to the user, and a second set of electrode segments (28) which defines a background display region. Each supply line (26) is sandwiched laterally between electrode segments such that the visual display output in the region of the supply line is substantially the same as that in the region of the electrode segments which sandwich the supply line. The electrode segments which sandwich the supply lines dominate the electric field distribution in the display medium layer so that visibility of the supply lines is reduced, even though they are formed on the same substrate surface as the electrode segments.
