    • An osmotic device is disclosed for delivering two beneficial drugs to an environment of use. The device comprises a semipermeable wall surrounding a lumen divided into a first compartment containing a drug that is separated from a second compartment containing a different drug. An orifice through the wall communicates with the first compartment for delivering drug from the first compartment, and another orifice through the wall communicates with the second compartment for delivering drug from the second compartment. In operation, drug is dispensed separately from each compartment by fluid being imbibed through the wall into each compartment at a rate controlled by the permeability of the wall and the osmotic pressure gradient across the wall against the drug in each compartment thereby producing in each compartment a solution containing drug that is dispensed through their orifices at a controlled and continuous rate over a prolonged period of time.

    • An osmotic system for delivering a beneficial agent is disclosed. The system comprises a wall surrounding a compartment and has a passageway through the wall for delivering agent from the compartment. The wall is formed of a material permeable to the passage of an external fluid and impermeable to the passage of agent. The compartment contains (1) an agent that is soluble in the fluid and exhibits an osmotic pressure gradient across the wall against the fluid, or (2) the compartment contains an agent having limited solubility in the fluid and exhibits a limited osmotic pressure gradient across the wall against the fluid. The compartment also contains along with (1) or (2) a volume amplifier for increasing the amount of agent delivered from the system. The amplifier comprises a membrane surrounding a gas generating couple with the membrane formed of an expandable material permeable to fluid and impermeable to the couple. In operation, agent is delivered from the system through the passageway at a controlled rate by fluid being imbibed through the wall into the compartment to produce a solution of (1), or a suspension of (2), and for imbibition by the amplifier causing the couple to generate gas and continuously fill the amplifier thereby urging it to increase in volume and fill the compartment whereby agent (1) or (2) is released at a rate controlled by the permeability of the wall, the osmotic pressure gradient across the wall, and the rate of imbibition and increase in volume of the amplifier over a prolonged period of time.

    • A system is disclosed for delivering a beneficial agent at a substantially constant rate over time. The system comprises (1) a wall formed of a microporous polymer, or (2) a wall formed in part of a microporous polymer with the remaining part of the wall formed of a semipermeable polymer. The wall in (1) surrounds a compartment comprising a flexible partition that separates the compartment into a first space containing the beneficial agent and a second space containing a swellable polymer. The wall in (2) surrounds a compartment comprising a flexible partition that separates the compartment into a first space in contact with the microporous wall and containing the beneficial agent, and a second space in contact with the semipermeable polymer containing an osmotically effective solute, or a swellable polymer. In operation, agent is delivered from the system by (a) fluid diffusing through the microporous wall into the second space causing the polymer to swell, or by (b) fluid being imbibed through the semipermeable wall into the second space causing the solute to dissolve and form a solution, or causing the polymer to swell, wherein in (a) or (b), the second space expands against the partition urging it to move into the first space and maintain the agent in a saturated state at the microporous wall, with the agent diffusing from the first space through fluid filled micropaths in the wall from the system at a substantially zero order rate over a prolonged period of time.

    • A device is disclosed for delivering an agent to an environment of use at a substantially constant rate over time. The device comprises a wall formed of a microporous material surrounding a compartment housing the agent and a thermodynamic member. The member comprises a film formed of an expandable, semipermeable material surrounding a means for expanding the member. The member can occupy any space-position in the compartment, and it also can be in contact with the wall. In operation, when the device is in the environment, agent is delivered from the device by diffusion through fluid-filled paths in the microporous wall, with external fluid simultaneously entering the compartment through the paths, also, fluid is imbibed by the member from fluid present in the compartment or directly across the wall causing it to expand, fill the compartment and continuously maintain agent in a substantially saturated state at the wall, thereby delivering agent at a substantially zero order rate of release from the device over a prolonged period of time.
