    • A method of isolating a memory location containing an obsolete value of a variable, in a shared memory of a computer, said location being referenced via a pointer for access in the context of a first transaction, a lock called a "hold" being placed on said location and being assigned to a single task, said hold preventing any other task from accessing said location. The method of the invention does not free the location containing the obsolete value, but it isolates it from transactions other than that transaction which possesses the first pointer. This allows the task owning the first pointer to continue to access said obsolete value. However, any transaction can access another value of the variable, without waiting, because the descriptor of said variable directs said transactions to a location which is freely accessible and contains said other value.

    • A method of extracting the contour of an object having two lateral edges, for example a road, from a digitized photographic image using an automatic active contour propagation process, comprises the steps of entering first and second initial contours near respective lateral edges of the object in the image. The first initial contour is propagated by means of a first automatic active contour propagation process and the second initial contour is propagated by means of a second active contour propagation process. Each propagation process uses, firstly, an energy model including a term relating to elastic coupling forces between paired points of the first and the second initial contours and, secondly, a direction of prolongation of the active contour defined as an average of two prolongation directions determined for the first and the second active contours, respectively.

    • An apparatus for operating a multiple-stand mill train is described which significantly reduces the expense and time for designing, testing and the start-up, including the optimization phase, and for restarting the roll operation of the mill train and which makes it possible to safely train the operators during operation and to extend the functionality of the mill train without creating damage. For this purpose, the entire mill train is simulated by a single physical simulation model (2) in a structured approach based on the technological interrelationship between the individual stands.
