    • An electrical connector provides for the connection of the contact pads of an IC card to a printed circuit board. The connector includes a base supportable on the printed circuit board and a cover pivotally removable with respect to the base. The base supports a plurality of electrical contacts. Each contact has a spring element and a contact tail extending from the base for termination to the printed circuit board. The cover is pivotally movable from an open position permitting insertion and removal of the card from the cover to a closed position with the contact pads of the IC card being positioned adjacent the spring elements. The cover is further movable linearly from the closed position to a locked position locking the cover to the base and moving the contact pads over the spring elements and into electrical engagement therewith.

    • A connection system requiring little or no force to mechanically and electrically connect a printed circuit board to a flexible printed circuit. The connection system includes a flat and rigid carrier having an upper surface upon which is affixed a flexible printed circuit having an electrically conductive raised area in the form of a plurality of raised dots. At the upper surface, the carrier has a groove formed therein, wherein the raised dots are located in the groove. An elastomeric insert is situated in the groove in abutting relation to the flexible printed circuit behind the raised dots. A rigid printed circuit board has an electrically conductive area in the form of a plurality of pads. The printed circuit board is inserted into the groove, whereupon the elastomer resiliently compresses so as to press the plurality of raised dots into tight electrical contact with the plurality of pads. In a first preferred embodiment the printed circuit board is inserted vertically with slight force. In a second preferred embodiment, the printed circuit board is inserted at an acute angle with zero insertion force and then rotated to the vertical.

    • A card connector for receiving a complementary card includes an elongate insulative housing having a first elongate wall, a second elongate wall opposite the first elongate wall and defining a plurality of passageways therein, a slot defined between the first and the second elongate walls and communicating with the passageways, and first and second supporting arms respectively and integrally formed with the two elongate walls and extending substantially perpendicular therefrom. A plurality of contacts are received in the passageways and project into the slot. First and second elastic locking members extend from two distal ends of the first elongate wall and are spaced from the first and second supporting arms for engagement with the complementary card which is inserted into the slot of the housing, wherein the locking members are manually bent outward with respect to an axis therebetween for releasing the engagement between the complementary card and the connector.

    • A method and structure of an electrical connector is provided for tuning the impedance of the connector according to a given impedance of an electrical circuit in which the connector is interconnected. The connector includes a dielectric housing having a receptacle for receiving a complementary mating connector. A plurality of terminals are mounted on the housing. The terminals include body portions located in the housing and contact portions located at the receptacle for engaging appropriate terminals of the mating connector when inserted into the receptacle. The areas of the body portions of the terminals are selectively varied to vary the capacitance of the terminals and, therefore, the impedance of the connector to match the given impedance of the electrical circuit. When the connector is used for mounting to a printed circuit board, ground terminals have at least two feet for engaging a respective single ground trace of a common ground circuit on the printed circuit board for reducing the inductance between a particular ground terminal and its respective circuit trace.
