摘要： A method for membrane filtration of effluent water containing suspended matter reduces membrane clogging and improves filtration capacity of the membrane. The method includes adding a dose of a preselected coagulation reactant to the effluent before the effluent passes over the membrane. The added dose is a fraction of the coagulating reactant dose (X) that would render the zeta potential of the effluent equal to zero. The range of the added dose is X/30-X/80. The suspended matter in the effluent is subjected to the added dose of coagulation reactant for destabilizing the suspended matter.

摘要： Upon recovering a fluorochemical surfactant from a fluorochemical-containing aqueous solution, there is provided a method for recovering the fluorochemical surfactant from the aqueous solution containing the surfactant. In the method, the fluorochemical surfactant is recovered by subjecting the aqueous solution containing the fluorochemical surfactant to a filtration treatment step with a reverse osmosis membrane so as to obtain from the aqueous solution, a concentrated aqueous solution in which the concentration of the fluorochemical surfactant is increased.

摘要： A high-voltage capacitive electrostatic device is used to improve the performance of membrane-separation processes, particularly reverse-osmosis units, wherein species of a given ionic polarity are separated from water. The device is immersed in the water flowing across the membranes and is operated continuously at very high voltages, preferably greater than 30,000 volts DC. The charge on the wetted surface of the suspended particles is altered by the electrostatic field so generated and is found to reduce biofilm formation, thereby materially enhancing the performance of the membrane-separation system. The application of high-voltage electrostatic fields is also found to reduce corrosion of metallic surfaces in the system.

摘要： The disclosed invention is an improved method for treating ethanol distillery discharge by recovering, through pressurized membrane filtration, pure water from still bottoms for human consumption and concentrating the solids before anaerobic fermentation. The invention is an improved process because it retains the heat to operate at high temperatures and recovers the water from the fermentation still bottoms while pasteurized in a sanitary manner and simultaneously concentrates the solids for digestion in a completely stirred tank reactor at thermophilic temperatures. The reactor produces a gas rich in methane fuel to power the pressurized filtration process, produces a reduced volume of reactor waste to manage, and an aqueous ammonia solution to recycle to the process. This invention improves environmental quality, conserves energy and produces a beverage of reliable source and quality.

摘要： An improved water purification system including a high-efficiency reverse osmosis (HERO) system and a base dosing system for rapidly raising the pH of wastewater treated in the system. The invention includes an ion exchange unit for initially removing positive and negative ions from the wastewater. A high-efficiency reverse osmosis (HERO) system is provided downstream of the ion exchange unit for further removing ions from the wastewater. A base dosing system is provided between the ion exchange unit and the HERO system for dosing a base into and rapidly raising the pH of the wastewater as the wastewater flows from the ion exchange unit into the HERO system.

摘要： A system and method for desalinating a feed solution containing a high level of sparingly soluble solutes, such as calcium sulfate, in which a high percentage of the water content of the feed solution is recovered as purified water. The method and system comprise introducing a sufficient quantity of nucleation crystals on the low pressure side of a first-pass membrane separation unit so that the sparingly soluble solutes precipitate on the suspended nucleation crystals, instead of on the surface of the first-pass semi-permeable membrane barrier. The permeate from the first-pass membrane separation unit is then sent to the high pressure side of a second-pass membrane separation unit. The second-pass semi-permeable membrane barrier rejects additional dissolved solutes, some of which can be recycled back to the first-pass membrane, so that permeate with a low level of dissolved solutes is produced on the low pressure side of the second-pass membrane barrier.
