    • An apparatus and method for detecting a signal in an optical data network is disclosed. A peak power level and an average power level are measured for an optical input to an optical detector. A threshold power level is associated with each average power level that is sufficient to distinguish a data signal form optical noise at the average power level. A signal is detected if the measured peak power level exceeds the threshold power level appropriate for the average power level. In one embodiment, a threshold value of a ratio of the peak power level to the average power level is calculated and a signal is detected if the ratio of the measured peak power level to the average power exceeds the threshold value.

    • According to one aspect of the present invention, the present invention provides an optical communication system, including: racks mounting many optical communication boards having optical modules thereon, and supplying system power to the mounted optical communication boards; a remote control line supplying a power supplying control signal to the optical communication boards mounted on the optional racks; optical communication boards receiving the system power by being mounted on the racks, and selectively supplying the supplied system power to the optical modules according to the power supplying control signal supplied through the remote control line; and a remote controller preventing the system power from being supplied to the optical modules when the optical communication boards are mounted on the racks while the system power is applied to the racks, and outputting the power to the corresponding optical modules through the remote control line in order to supply the power to the corresponding optical modules when the system power is stable at predetermined level by being applied to the optical communication boards. Therefore, it can prevent the optical modules from being damaged by the system power when the optical communication boards are mounted on the optical communication system.

    • A wireless communications link between a communication line connector and at least one audio-visual device is provided. The communications link preferably includes a communication line side unit, including: (a) a communication line side connector for engagement with the communication line connector for bidirectional audio-visual data communication, providing communication between a communication line and the at least one audio-visual device, (b) a communication line side infrared transmitter adapted to transmit diffuse infrared radiation corresponding to the data communication, and (c) a communication line side infrared receiver adapted to receive diffuse infrared radiation corresponding to the data communication. The communications link preferably also includes an audio-visual device side unit, including: (a) an audio-visual device side connector for engagement with the at least one audio-visual device for bidirectional signal communication therewith via a universal serial bus (USB), (b) an audio-visual device side infrared transmitter adapted to transmit diffuse infrared radiation to the communication line side infrared receiver, and (c) an audio-visual device side infrared receiver adapted to receive diffuse infrared radiation from the communication line side infrared transmitter.
