    • A web of copying material is transported on-edge through an exposure-station web guidance system provided with a masking system which includes stationary and shiftable transverse-edge framing plates. The projected image of a first longitudinal-edge reference line on the copy table supporting the original is brought into register with a corresponding reference line of the masking system. The projection scale is adjusted to cause the format-breadth of the projected image to be at most slightly smaller than the format breadth of the web, but in no event greater. The projected image of the first transverse edge of the original is brought into register with the edge of the stationary framing plate, and then that of the second transverse edge with that of the shiftable framing plate. This registration is effected by sensing infrared-light images of the dark-light transitions associated with the transverse edges of the original. An exposure is performed. Before transporting the exposed section of web out of the exposure station, a cutting mark is provided by a perforator on the shiftable framing plate, and this cutting mark is thereafter detected by a detector on the stationary framing plate and triggers a severing operation.

    • A xerographic copier machine capable of producing copies of an original document in a selectable magnification ratio. The machine includes an object mirror and a light source forming a scanning assembly which travels at a uniform velocity under a transparent platen on which the document to be copied is placed, face down. The object mirror reflects the illuminated image of the document toward a relay mirror moving in the same direction but at half the scan velocity, the relay mirror directing the image toward a stationary projection lens, behind which is a reflex mirror. The reflex mirror re-directs the image through the lens onto an image mirror which casts the image onto the photoreceptor surface of a rotating drum. The peripheral velocity of the drum is synchronized with the scan velocity of the scan assembly by an adjustable transmission whereby a latent image of the entire document is formed in the photoreceptor surface. In order to selectively change the magnification ratio, a retractable auxiliary lens is placed in front of the projection lens to alter the focal length of the optics, and the position of the image mirror relative to the drum is shifted to bring the image in focus on the photoreceptor surface. The synchronization transmission is adjusted to change the scan velocity of the assembly to a value appropriate to the selected magnification ratio.

    • A reproduction camera has a carrier for a replaceable objective lens and a carrier for the image plane, both carriers being movable to different distances from a copy holder by electric motors, and an electronic digital computer, which determines the actual distances of the carriers from the holder by counting electrical pulses generated upon incremental movements of the carriers (as by pole passages of the motors, or directly); the desired distances for sharp focus, corrected for T (distance of the objective lens from the objective carrier) and HH'' (distance between principal focal points) are computed on the basis of the desired magnification and the focal length of the selected lens, and are compared with the actual distances; and the motors are controlled as the results of the comparisons of the actual and the desired distances.

    • A constant focus drive apparatus for controlling the positioning of an object and a lens arrangement in a camera system relative to a desired plane so as to keep an image of the object focused in such plane, comprising means e.g. potentiometers for measuring the object and image distances and for producing distance signals representative thereof, drive means e.g. one or more servo systems and/or a manually controlled motor connected to the camera system for varying both the object and image distances, and a computer which may be analogue or digital and may use electricity, pneumatic or hydraulic power, or other powering medium and which is programmed with the lens formula of the camera system to compute, in accordance with the measured values of the object and image distances, a control signal for application to the drive means to alter one or both of said distances as necessary so that the image is kept focused in said plane.
