摘要： By specifically orientating an interior surface with an applied chemical additive in a multi-ply web with respect to the crimping roll, the ply attachment strength between the plies can be increased. In one aspect, a three-ply facial tissue product has the middle ply treated with a virucidal chemical additive. The three plies are crimped together such that the interior surface with the virucidal chemical additive faces the protuberances of a crimping roll as the plies are crimped together. When crimped in this manner, the variability in the ply attachment strength between the first outer ply and the middle ply as compared to the ply attachment strength between the middle ply and the second outer ply is reduced.

摘要： A lignocellulose-based anion-adsorbing medium (LAM) and process for making and using same for selectively removing phosphates and arsenic contaminants from aqueous solutions is disclosed. Making the LAM comprises (a) dissociating cations such as Fe and Al, from their counterions by adding a chemical compound containing said cations to water and acidifying; (b) pelletizing a lignocellulose; (c) adsorbing the cations to the lignocellulose by bringing the lignocellulose into contact with the solution of step (a) and incubating; and, (d) exposing the lignocellulose of step (c) to an alkaline fixing agent to replace hydrogens (H) of the hydroxyl groups of the lignocellulose with the adsorbed cations to produce the LAM with a positive charge. The LAM may be used to selectively and cost-effectively remove phosphate and arsenic contaminants from aqueous solutions by retaining them at the Fe or Al on the LAM.

摘要： A method and an apparatus for monitoring and controlling a characteristic of process waters or effluents from wood pulp bleaching, pulping and paper making processes utilizing a bleaching agent such as hydrogen peroxide (H.sub.2 O.sub.2), Na.sub.2 S.sub.2 O.sub.4, ClO.sub.2, Cl.sub.2 or O.sub.3 or a pulp delignification process utilizing a delignification agent such as NaOH, Na.sub.2 S, O.sub.2, Na.sub.2 SO.sub.3, and enzymes including ligninase, xylanase, mannanase, laccase, and peroxidase are disclosed. This is done by obtaining at least three measurements of ultraviolet-visible light from the effluent by taking a first measurement measured at a first wavelength, a second measurement measured at a second wavelength, and a third measurement at a third wavelength, formulating two ratios from the three measurements and using the ratios for computing an empirical value of the characteristic of the effluent. Feedback control is used for adjusting feed input components in accordance with the computed empirical value of the characteristic such that a target measurement of the characteristic is obtained.

摘要： Binder is applied to fibers during the production of a web on a wet laid sheet manufacturing line. Particles are bound to fibrous material by a binder that has a volatility less than water, wherein the binder has a functional group capable of forming a hydrogen bond with the fibers, and a functional group that is capable of forming a hydrogen bond or a coordinate covalent bond with the particles. The binder may be activated or reactivated by addition of heat, liquid, or mechanical energy such that fibers treated with binder may be shipped to a distribution point before particles are bound to the fibers. The binder may be a polymeric binder selected from the group consisting of polyethylene glycol, polypropylene glycol, polyacrylic acid, polyamides and polyamines, and in which the polymeric binder has a hydrogen bonding functionality or coordinate covalent bond forming functionality on each repeating unit of the polymeric binder. Alternatively, the binder may be a non-polymeric organic binder that includes a functionality such as a carboxylic acid, an alcohol, an amino acid, an amide, and an amine, wherein there are at least two such functionalities on the molecule, which may be the same or different functionality. Particles attached to the fibers in this manner are firmly adhered and are not easily dislodged. Fibrous products produced by this method include fibers to which particles are bound and may also include other fibers.
