摘要： A method of cooling a heat treatment bath of melted salt into which heat is being introduced through the quenching of hot workpieces, the heat being removed from the salt bath through the introduction of a partially evaporated cooling medium, preferably water, whose complete evaporation takes place in direct contact with the melted salt, a portion of the latter being at the same time entrained in a circulatory flow out of the treatment tank and back into it, thereby agitating the salt bath for temperature equalization. The device includes a heat exchanger immersed in the salt bath for the partial evaporation of the cooling medium, and a circulation pipe for direct contact of the cooling medium with the melted salt.

In a preferred embodiment, the furnace utilizes a plurality of elongate tubes which receive detachably held elongate articles. Upon release, the elongate articles fall while oriented vertically by the guide elements into the quenching liquid. Warping or bending of the elongate articles is thereby prevented during the transfer from the furnace to the quenching liquid.

The invention includes a work holder within which the work is positioned during the automatic heat treating procedures, the work holder being provided with an upstanding vertical perforated wall such that, on positioning the work holder and work, after being preheated in a furnace, into the quenching medium, the work will be automatically quenched and cooled through the rapidly cooling initial and subsequent slow cooling time and temperature stages, achieving uniform transformation and hardness of work having varying forms and thicknesses to the martensitic transformation stage.

摘要： An apparatus and method for transporting metal slabs into and from a cooling basin comprises, on a carriage movable longitudinally of the basin, a unitary slab grasping device including a plurality of grasping devices spaced apart transversely of the basin, each of which devices forms two sideby-side downwardly opening pockets for alternately receiving a slab and is provided with a retainer member for releasably latching a slab in either pocket. The carriage is moved to a slab feed station at one end of the basin, where a hot slab is fed into and grasped in one of the pockets; thence along the basin to a location where the grasping device is lowered into the basin and is operated both to deposit the hot slab into an empty compartment of the basin and grasp in the other pocket a cooled slab present in an adjacent compartment. The grasping device then is raised and the carriage is moved farther to discharge the cooled slab at the other end of the basin. The retainer may comprise for each grasping device a member movable to close the bottom of either pocket or a separate retainer member for each pocket.
