    • An escalator step cleaner for cleaning escalator steps having a plurality of parallel tread ridges separated by tread grooves has a cleaning pad assembly configured to extend generally perpendicular to the direction of motion of the escalator steps and clean the escalator steps while the escalator is in motion. The cleaning pad assembly has a rigid upper plate and a flexible disposable bottom pad having a cleaning contact surface. The contact surface carries a plurality of spaced parallel pad ridges separated by pad grooves that matingly engage between the tread ridges of the escalator steps and cause dislodgement of the accumulated debris. The cleaning pad assembly can be secured on a hand-held cleaning tool or on a motorized cleaning tool with rotating brushes and a vacuum.

    • A cleaning unit for cleaning travel equipment allows the travel equipment to be shifted from an operating mode to a cleaning mode. The cleaning equipment is an escalator or a moving walkway which has tread units connected with an endless conveyor. The cleaning unit can be mounted as a substitute for a tread unit of the travel equipment during a cleaning sequence and includes cleaning elements. The travel equipment can be shifted from an operating mode to a cleaning mode in which the cleaning equipment is substituted for one or more tread units and the travel equipment operated whereby a cleaning sequence is performed. After cleaning is performed, the equipment is stopped, the cleaning equipment removed, and the removed treads reinstalled.

    • An apparatus for collecting particulate material has a collection tray (1) and a fire-resistant collection reservoir (21, 22, 23). A scraper blade (24) is attached to a carriage (7) which is arranged to be driven by an electrical motor along the base of the tray (1) so as to sweep particulate material into the reservoir (21, 22, 23). A pivotal lid normally closes an opening into the reservoir (21, 22, 23) until the scraper blade is ready to sweep particulate material into the reservoir, whereupon the lid is opened to receive the swept particulate material. Actuation of the lid for the reservoir may be operated by electro-mechanical switches or by a solenoid (60).

    • A cart conveyor system for the transport of load-carrying carts, as frequently used in airports, supermarkets, etc. up and down inclined pathways. The cart is provided with front and back wheels with different spacing, and the conveyor has separate tracks for the front and back wheels, arranged to support the wheels in a manner that maintains the cart in a generally horizontal orientation as it moves up or down the conveyor path. The cart is engaged adjacent one end by laterally opposed conveyor elements, which advance the cart along the incline. At the other end of the cart, a retaining element extends downward and is engaged by a retaining track to prevent tipping of the cart as it is moved along the conveyor path.

    • A sloping transportation apparatus in which a step for carrying a large-sized object periodically appears without requiring any successive operation and which yet constitutes no hindrance to ordinary passengers' standing, ascent or descent. An enlarged step, of which the tread face has a run large enough to place a large-sized object such as a wheelchair thereon, is preceded and followed by at least one reduced step having a tread face with a reduced run (where ordinary steps have a run of 400 mm, 500 mm or 600 mm, the enlarged step is preceded and followed by three, two or one reduced step, respectively), to absorb the excess of the run of the enlarged step so that the steps may be equally joined in a horizontal straight traveling section. Also, a step structure for coupling each tread face to supporting rollers is provided. An auxiliary wheel is additionally provided to reinforce the support for the enlarged step, and the shape of a step guide surface is determined such that the steps do not interfere with peripheral parts in a turning section. The structure is applicable to an apparatus of the type in which the steps circulate in two ways with horizontal orientation of the tread faces thereof maintained throughout the entire traveling course. The enlarged tread face may have a recess formed therein as a wheel stopper for receiving the ground-touching portions of wheels.
