    • The present invention provides a smoothing roller for a printing unit of a rotary printing machine. The smoothing roller is applied to the form cylinder downstream of the ink applicator roller in relation to the direction of rotation of the form cylinder or onto the ink applicator roller itself. The smoothing roller smooths the ink film on the form cylinder or on the ink applicator roller. The outer surface of the smoothing roller has an ink-repelling characteristic. The ink-repelling characteristic is effected by a liquid ink-repelling material such as a separating agent or a dampening medium that is applied to the outer surface of the smoothing roller or by an outer surface of the smoothing roller comprising an ink-repelling material. The two measures for effecting the ink-repellant characteristic of the smoothing roller may also be provided in combination with one another.

    • An apparatus and method which reduces solid mottling in an offset printing press. One or more form rolls having a hard elastomeric outer surface, in the range of approximately 50-100 Shore A durometer hardness, preferably approximately 60-90 Shore A durometer hardness, are used to transfer ink to the plate cylinder. The use of a form roll of this type ensures a smoother application of ink to the plate cylinder, which in turn ensures smoother ink application to the blanket cylinder and printed web. If more than one form roll is used, it is preferable that, at a minimum, the final form roll, i.e., the last form roll the plate cylinder contacts in the direction of rotation, be a hard elastomeric form roll. In another aspect of the present invention, the form rolls can be made of a convex shape along their axial length, such that the diameter of the form rolls at their axial center is larger than the diameter of the form rolls at their axial ends. This is done to ensure proper contact between the form rolls and the plate cylinder. The present invention also encompasses a method of printing which reduces solid mottling and consumes less ink than in the prior art for an equivalent optical density.

    • In-line printing and coating method achieves high coat weights (e.g, over 0.7 lb./1,000 sq.ft.) characteristic of blister seal operations and/or high gloss and high scuff resistance requirements, substantially without deleterious slinging. A high volume of coating is applied to a substrate by a coating cylinder supporting a resilient coating transfer surface consisting of an array of laser engraved coating-carrying indentations having substantially equal volumes that are uniformly distributed. An impression surface is positioned adjacent to the coating cylinder, positioned to impress a substrate between the coating transfer surface and the impression surface. A supply roll has a surface for applying liquid coating to the resilient transfer surface. The supply roll surface and the resilient transfer surface are in pressure contact, and adjacent surfaces of the supply roll and the coating cylinder rotate in the same direction. A metering member contacts the supply roll, so the load on the supply roll is metered before it is imparted to the resilient transfer surface. Resilient polymer and rubber surfaces carrying high volumes of coating are also disclosed. The cylinder supporting the resilient transfer surface can be advantageously used in other applications, for instance a roll of a keyless inker of an offset printing unit in a printing press.
