    • It is known to roll light sections by rolling the material on continuous roughing and finishing mills in succession, subsequently cutting the material into lengths and conveying them transversely in a cooling bed. The invention increases the capacity of the rolling mill by providing two parallel-axis finishing mills with a shear and a switch between the roughing mill and the finishing mill, the shear being actuated when the leading end of the respective length is at least within the respective finishing mill, and the length being initially rolled in the finishing mill at a speed equivalent to that of the roughing mill, but after a substantial proportion of the length has passed through the finishing mill, the finishing mill speed being substantially reduced, the next succeeding length meanwhile being fed through the other finishing mill.

    • A cartridge loadable combination mill for rolling beam, structural or plate products. The combination mill includes a pair of cartridge or cartridge-like loaded mill stands, the first of which has a movable mill housing and the second of which is adaptable to being moved out of the mill line. The cartridges contain a pair of horizontal and vertical rolls that are aligned and adjusted prior to insertion into the mill stands through the mill housing windows. A four station cartridge transfer means having alternative stations simultaneously alignable with both mill stand windows is provided for supporting, positioning, and transferring work roll cartridges to the mill stands for insertion therein. A pair of movable table rolls with side guards adjustable to the maximum width of the first mill stand are movable either along the mill line or out of said line.

    • A plurality of nonreversible two-high rolling mill stands define a plurality of pass groove lines disposed one beside the other. A first roller bed unit precedes said rolling mill stands. A second roller bed unit succeeds said rolling mill stands. An additional roller bed unit extends under said rolling mill stands between said first and second roller bed units and is operable to return stock from said second roller bed unit to said first roller bed unit. Each of said first and second roller bed units comprises a plurality of roller bed sections disposed one beside the other, and guide means laterally defining guide paths on said roller bed sections. At least two of said roller bed sections of each of said first and second roller bed units are reversible and adapted to be lowered to the level of said additional roller bed unit. Each of said first and second roller bed units is provided with deflecting means, which are adapted to deflect stock onto a desired one of said reversible roller bed sections of the respective roller bed unit.
