    • Various surgical devices are provided having mechanisms for preventing premature actuation of a cutting mechanism. These devices generally include a handle having one or more actuators and an effector disposed at a distal end of the device and configured to grasp tissue. When the end effector is in an open position, a firing actuator can be positioned so that it cannot be actuated by a user. For example, the firing actuator can be obstructed by a shield or arm when the end effector is in the open position. In other embodiments, the firing actuator can be hidden in a recess formed in the closure actuator until the end effector is moved to the closed position. When the end effector is in the closed position, the firing actuator can be engaged to advance a cutting mechanism, thereby cutting the tissue grasped by the end effector.

    • An RFID tag is provided that is suitable for mounting on surgical instruments, and by means of which stable anchoring on the instrument, encapsulation of the RFID elements from the surroundings, good cleanability and improved detectability can be achieved. The RFID tag has a metal holder, a housing that is made of an electrically non-conductive or slightly conductive material, an accommodating chamber and an RFID element with an antenna. The RFID element is arranged in the accommodating chamber of the housing. The housing has a first end which is held on the metal holder. The accommodating chamber in the housing is formed to be spatially spaced apart from the first end of the housing. The RFID element is positioned in the accommodating chamber in such a way that the antenna of the RFID element is spatially arranged substantially outside of the metal holder.

    • A retaining member for a surgical instrument insert is described. The instrument insert includes a retaining member which is free to move along the shaft before the insert is attached to the handle. The retaining member comprises a resilient member integrally formed with the retaining member. The resilient member can engage the surgical instrument insert shaft and act to prevent the retaining member falling off before the insert is attached to the handle. Because the resilient member is integrally formed the cost of manufacture is reduced. In another embodiment, a surgical instrument insert is provided wherein a proximal portion of the outer shaft is manufactured from an insulating material. The insulating material can be cheaper than the aluminum conventionally used. As a further advantage this also reduces the risk of electric shock and bums when used in an electrically live environment.

When the grasping members are in the closed configuration, the openings of the distal bodies can form a cavity to receive the cutting member to shield the cutting member during navigation within a body of a patient.
