    • A sickle cutting apparatus includes a plurality of triple finger knife guards which are arranged side by side along the cutter bar to cooperate with a reciprocating sickle bar carrying a row of double blade knife sections and a set of hold-down members carrying hold-down fingers. The hold-down members are arranged alternately as a single finger and double finger with each hold-down member being connected to the cutter bar in association with a respective triple guard. In this way the hold-down fingers are arranged at alternate guard fingers leaving the intervening guard fingers open. The system includes both pointed guards with no tang and stub guard so that the user can select either to be used with the hold-downs. The hold down fingers are all individually adjustable so that the double hold-down have two adjustment screws which can be individually operated causing flexing of the bridge between the double fingers.

    • In a sickle cutting apparatus including a row of stationary knife guards and a sickle bar with a row of blade sections for reciprocating movement mounted thereon, each of the blade sections is simply removable from the sickle bar for replacement by mounting a rear plate portion on the sickle bar where each of the rear plate portions has a pair of holes bolted to mating holes in the bar and each hole in the blade is connected to an associated slot extending rearwardly in the rear plate portion from the hole to a rear edge. In this way the blade section can be pulled forwardly by loosening the bolt and sliding the bolt along the slot until the blade is released. A circular counter-bore in the blade section receives a nut when tightened to hold the blade section in place. The system can be used with pointed guards or stub guards.

    • An optical range finder for determining the distance of an object may comprise an optical source of electromagnetic radiation. A focusing optical member focuses the electromagnetic radiation upon a micro-mirror array. A processor controls the micro-mirror array to direct the focused electromagnetic radiation in a defined direction or a defined radiation pattern. A transmission optical member focuses the defined radiation pattern toward an object. A reception optical member receives electromagnetic radiation reflected from the object. A detector detects the receipt of the reflected electromagnetic radiation. A timer determines an elapsed time between transmission of the electromagnetic radiation to the object and receipt of the electromagnetic radiation from the object. A data processor converts elapsed time into a distance between the object and a reference point.

    • A mower shield is provided for rear engine driven riding lawn mowers which shield includes a top panel having a rear portion, a central portion, and a front portion, and is positionable to overhang the leading edge of the deck by connection to at least one supporting element. More specifically, the supporting element suspends a section of the top panel over the deck such that its rear portion generally extends across the deck substantially in contact therewith, while a section of the top panel and the front portion are suspended beyond the leading edge of the deck. The air currents established by this mower shield cause such grass clippings as are expelled forwardly from beneath the deck to enter the chamber defined by the mower shield and be redirected downwardly, away from the operator. Flexible rear and front portions of the top panel permit clearing of debris, while transparent central and front portions of the top panel permit inspection and increase visibility of the cutting path.

    • A power operated sickle is provided having a plurality of stationary guards projecting forwardly from a sickle bar with relatively narrow guide channels between them wherein the channels between the guards have a length-to-width ratio on the order of about 2/1 or greater, the center distances between the guards are about twice the width of the channel between the guards and the cutting teeth cooperating with the guards are pitched to extend laterally a distance of about 1/3 the distance between the centers of the guards whereby an angle of less than about 20.degree. is established between the cutting edges of the teeth and the cooperating side edges of the guards. The centers of the guards are spaced less than about 2" apart and each guard includes longitudinally extending downwardly projecting keel with a height on the order of about two times the width of the guard to provide an improved overall geometrical configuration for increasing cutting capacity while at the same time reducing the tendency of material to clog the sickle.
