摘要： A hole of a hole size is cut in a composite material workpiece by selecting a milling cutter having an effective cutter size less than the hole size, mounting the composite material workpiece in operable relation to the milling cutter, rotating the milling cutter about an axis of rotation, and advancing the milling cutter longitudinally into the composite material workpiece parallel to the axis of rotation at a rate of longitudinal advance, while laterally moving the milling cutter perpendicular to the axis of rotation to interpolate the hole. The rate of longitudinal advance is controlled such that the hole remains substantially a flat-bottomed hole as it is cut. The composite material workpiece is desirably affixed to a backing fixture with an adhesive material during the cutting of the hole.

摘要： A milling tool 8 includes a tool holder 10 for housing multiple thread cutting inserts 24 for precise milling of threads on a workpiece. The tool holder 10 is rotatable in an orbitable path spaced radially from a milling axis and is simultaneously rotatable about its own axis for repeatedly bringing each of the cutting inserts into engagement with the workpiece. Each cutting insert is precisely positioned within the tool holder by a stop surface 62 located at an axially rearward end of an insert cavity 28 in the tool holder. An axially elongate tool holder groove 32 is provided in communication with a side face of the generally rectilinear insert cavity. Each cutting insert defines a substantially rectangular plate, an end face for mating engagement with the stop surface 62 and an axially elongate insert groove 26 extending from a corresponding side face on the rectangular plate. A plurality of elongate pins 30 are each insertably engaged within each respective tool holder groove and insert groove, and are each secured by a plurality of screws 34 and 35 for applying a uniform force through the axis of the elongate pin for securing the respective cutting insert into a precise stabilized position within the tool holder.

摘要： In an otherwise conventional, mechanically controlled lathe the workpiece support spindle can be disconnected from the main mechanical drive transmission and coupled to the main drive motor via a second mechanical transmission which can introduce an angular offset between the workpiece support spindle and a milling tool that is proportional to the travel along the feed axis of a toolholder carriage carrying the milling tool. The angular offset is introduced by a coupling sleeve coupling two transmission half-shafts via helical teeth to transmit movement to the workpiece support spindle. The coupling sleeve is moved axially by the toolholder carriage. In this way straight threads and helical threads with a large pitch can be cut on an otherwise conventional lathe.
