    • The present invention provides a high frequency electronic ballast with ignition and operation control, and method of use, comprising a ballast microcontroller (200) responsive to at least one high intensity discharge (HID) lamp feedback signal and generating an HID lamp control signal; a parallel capacitive circuit (214) operably connected parallel to the HID lamp (216); an inductive circuit (212) operably connected to the parallel capacitive circuit (214); means for switching power (252) to the inductive circuit (212) in response to the HID lamp control signal; and means for monitoring the HID lamp (216) to generate at least one high intensity discharge (HID) lamp feedback signal. In one embodiment, the HID lamp feedback signal can be an ignition voltage signal (266). In another embodiment, the HID lamp feedback signal can be a sensed rail voltage signal (256), a sensed lamp current signal (264), and a sensed lamp power signal (258).

A circuit to drive a light source includes a control device to drive the light source, which is composed of a discharge tube, and to switch the light source to a plurality of lighting modes including a rated power mode and a power saving mode. The control device includes a lighting mode setting unit to set the lighting mode to one of the plurality of lighting modes, and a rated power supplying unit to supply a rated power to the light source at the lighting starting time of the light source until a halogen cycle of the discharge tube is stabilized. The control device switches the light source to the lighting mode set by the lighting mode setting unit after the halogen cycle of the discharge tube is stabilized.

    • A power saving dimming apparatus for gas discharge lamps activates a system of gas discharge lamps through a phototransistor network sensitive to the infrared spectrum rather than the normal visible spectrum. The phototransistor network allows power to be supplied to the apparatus, resulting in the turning on of the lamps whenever daylight conditions exist which are insufficient to produce infrared light. When power is applied to the apparatus, either at initial turn on or after a momentary interruption, the apparatus applies full power to the primaries of the lamp ballasts for a preselected time period, thus ensuring all the lamps in the system light. After the preselected time period has passed, the apparatus automatically dims the lamps and maintains them in the dimmed state.

    • A method and circuit for providing stability during dimming of an electrodeless high intensity metal halide discharge lamp driven by a microwave source. Light from the lamp is rapidly dimmed to a low level in a stable manner while preventing the possibility of lamp extinction. Remote optical sensing of lamp light output is coupled with power control circuitry which modifies power delivered to the lamp based on the light response to well defined pulses of power in the output of the microwave source. Power delivered to the lamp is increased when the rate of light drop exceeds a predetermined rate and also, is controlled based on the overall light emission intensity. As a result, stable dimming is achieved regardless of the initial conditions of the discharge. The dimming method disclosed is more forgiving of light-source-system manufacturing tolerances than is presently available using absolute light intensity control alone when source output power is limited.

    • A power supply for high voltage, low current gas discharge tubes such as neon, argon, and mercury vapor. A free running, flyback oscillator, converts D.C. voltage energy into radio frequency energy by means of a compact, ferrite transformer and associated circuitry. The primary winding is tuned by a resonant capacitor and driven by a power transistor. A high voltage, centertapped winding of a ferrite transformer drives the gas tube load directly. A feedback winding arranged across the transistor base and emitter junction sustains oscillation and controls the drive level of the transistor by means of a regulating circuit which controls the amplitude of the current. Oscillator starting is achieved by means of an on-off switch which supplies a single starting pulse to the power transistor or by means of a time delayed starting pulse. A MOSFET transistor connected to the power transistor base and a current sensing transformer arranged in series with the primary winding, disables the power transistor momentarily at the end of a conducting cycle. Charge carries are depleted in the base-cathode region, resulting in resetting the transistor quickly such that it can withstand a forward voltage of 700 volts in the off state.

    • A portable high pressure sodium lamp lighting system is mounted on a mobile cart, the cart carrying a mobile power supply in the form of an automotive type battery. The portable lighting system employs a standard high pressure sodium luminaire designed to be driven by 115 volt 60 cycle utility generated power.     • A high intensity discharge lamp (HID) control circuit and method are provided in the present invention. The circuit includes a first winding and a second winding, both of which are coupled with a series-connected inductor of an HID lamp circuit; a current zero point detector for detecting an inductor current zero crossing signal in the HID lamp circuit; an inductor current signal generator for generating an inductor current signal in the circuit to indicate a current value of the HID lamp; a modulator having input terminals connected to the current zero point detector and the inductor current signal generator, respectively, and an output terminal connected to a driving circuit for the HID lamp; and the driving circuit for driving switches in the HID lamp control circuit.
