    • An image forming apparatus includes an image forming unit, image formation control section, counter, image formation condition regulation section, controlled printed-paper number storage section, and regulation control section. The image forming unit includes a plurality of functional sections. The counter counts a cumulative printed-paper number in a series of image formation processing. The image formation condition regulation section regulates an image formation condition of at least one of the functional sections. The controlled printed-paper number storage section stores a benchmark printed-paper number and first allowable value to determine the timing of regulating the image creation condition. The first allowable value is set to be less than the benchmark printed-paper number. The regulation control section activates the image creation condition regulation section after the series of image formation processing when the cumulative printed-paper number is equal to or greater than the first allowable value after the series of image formation processing.

    • What is disclosed is a novel system and method for minimizing visual artifacts, such as ROS skew and laserbeam bow, in a brick-layer halftone structure. The present method involves determining a line pattern from ROS skew and laserbeam bow profiles which traverses through successive halftone cells displacing pixels along scanlines in the process direction. The amount of displacement is varied as a function of the cross-process location as determined by the line pattern. Pixels along scanlines are shifted in a direction defined by the error profiles. In each halftone cell within which the line pattern traverses, extra pixels (empty pixel spaces created in the halftone cell by the shifting operation) are filled with lost pixels (pixels bumped from the halftone cell during the shifting operation) such that overall density of the halftone cell is maintained. The lost pixels are buffered such that lost pixels are preserved.

    • An image forming apparatus capable of decreasing the image unevenness of a superimposed image at the time of forming starting (head) lines of the images in respective colors with different beams in order to decrease a shift of a superimposed image. Let a position, where an image in a first color is formed with a beam A as a leading beam, be (a). Let a starting position of formation of an image in a second color be (b), and one dot (line) of shift arises in the superimposed image. In order to decrease the shift of the superimposed image, image formation is performed with selecting a beam B as a beam which writes a head of the image (c). When image formation is performed for color shift reduction with changing a leading beam for each color image, tonality correction is performed to each beam for subsequent images so as to decrease image unevenness due to the difference between shapes and exposure power of respective beams.

    • An image forming apparatus capable of accurately compensating an increase or decrease of a toner area coverage resulting from shifting that is performed to correct skew is provided. A color density of image data represented by a correction target pixel is corrected such that the increase or decrease in the toner area coverage on the correction target pixel is compensated excluding a toner area coverage on the correction target pixel covered by a toner image that would be formed based on a color density of image data to be represented by a neighboring pixel of the correction target pixel. This effectively reduces banding noise on an output of the image data and prevents degradation in image quality.
