摘要： A fuel cell which can self-heat in a short time, in which no reaction gas is necessary for combustion, thereby improving the starting performance at low temperatures. The fuel cell comprises a cell structure in which an anode and a cathode are provided on either side of a solid polymer electrolyte membrane. This cell structure has a power generation plane and at least a part of the generation plane is defined as a local generation area so as to locally generate power. The fuel cell may include a pair of separators between which the cell structure is placed, and a reaction gas passage may be formed between the cell structure and each separator. One of a system for supplying a reaction gas to only a part of the reaction gas passage, and a system for supplying a reaction gas to the entire reaction gas passage is switchably selected.

摘要： A lightweight direct methanol fuel cell unit (20) comprising a fuel cell stack (24) enclosed within a housing (22). In one embodiment the fuel cell stack includes a plurality of polymer electrolyte membrane electrode assemblies (52) stacked alternatingly with a plurality of bipolar plates (48). Each bipolar plate includes a cathode flow field (78) defined by a porous cathode flow field structure (56) and an anode flow field (62) defined by an upper plate (58) and a lower plate (60) separated from one another by a plurality of spacers (64). The anode flow fields are manifolded with one another via manifold embossments (118, 120) that are hermetically sealed with one another with a gasket (126). The fuel cell stack and housing are shaped so as to form four manifold regions (36) in the spaces between the fuel cell stack and housing. The fuel cell stack is compressed within the housing by compression members (94) located between the fuel cell stack and housing so as to place the sidewall (30) of the housing into tension. Supporting systems for the fuel cell unit include a fuel handling system (502), an oxidant handling system (600), and a liquid inventory control system (700).

The reformed gas supplied to the inner manifold 6, before being distributed to each cell 1, is flow-regulated by the piercing member 4. Thus, the reformed gas is distributed uniformly to each cell 1, a stable power generation is done, and performance of the fuel cell can be improved.

摘要： An integrated end-bus plate for fuel cell stack includes main plate body and a conducting plate. The main plate body is made of corrosion resistant and non-conducting material, which inner side has at least a contacting surface provided for flatly in contact with one side of the fuel cell unit attached adjacent to the main plate body. The conducting plate which is made of electro-conducting material is integrally attached to an inner side of the main plate body to form an integrated body for electrically communicating with the reaction region of the fuel cell unit. The integrated end-bus plate is designed to overcome the conventional drawbacks including the fluid leaking between the end plate and the bus plate and the formation of metallic ions due to the electrochemical corrosion of the bus plate that generally results in causing damages to the fuel cell.

To prevent the risk of breakage, and thus leaks, these are enclosed with a tight fit in a pressure vessel and mechanical pressure is produced on raising the temperature. The opposite ends of the pressure vessel delimit compartments for the supply and removal of one of the reactants. The other reactant is supplied to the pressure vessel and removed therefrom close to the ends of the fuel cells.

摘要： The invention provides a fuel cell incorporating a thermal management scheme and associated methods of operation. In one aspect, a fuel cell system includes a frame enclosing a fuel cell, a coolant flow circuit and a heat exchanger. The frame has at least one external panel mounted thereon to enclose the fuel cell, a coolant circuit and heat exchanger. The coolant flow circuit is adapted to circulate a coolant through the heat exchanger and across a surface of the fuel cell to provide heat transfer between the fuel cell and the heat exchanger. An inlet orifice and an outlet orifice are coupled to the frame and to the heat exchanger, and are adapted to provide an export flow circuit from the inlet orifice through the heat exchanger to the outlet orifice. An insulating material is fixed to a surface of the external panel.
