    • A system and method for controlling a remote vehicle comprises a hand-held controller including a laser generator for generating a laser beam. The hand-held controller is manipulable to aim and actuate the laser beam to designate a destination for the remote vehicle. The remote vehicle senses a reflection of the laser beam and moves toward the designated destination. The hand-held controller allows single-handed control of the remote vehicle and one or more of its payloads. A method for controlling a remote vehicle via a laser beam comprises encoding control signals for a remote vehicle into a laser beam that is aimed and sent to a designated destination for the remote vehicle, and sensing a reflection of the laser beam, decoding the control signals for the remote vehicle, and moving toward the designated destination.

    • A system provides an audible signal to the user of the system before a control or function is activated by the user. In one embodiment, a remote control can be used with an apparatus, such as a set-top box. When the user places an object near a control of the remote control, a control or function associated with the control may be announced to the user before activating the control. The system can include an apparatus is configured to be operated at least in part from a remote control that includes a plurality of controls including a first control. The apparatus includes a control module configured to receive an identification signal from the remote control, wherein the identification signal corresponds to the control, determine a state of the apparatus, determine a function to which the control corresponds, and send another identification signal to an audio system.

    • A user interface in the form of a string of beads allows specific data sets, each corresponding to one of the beads, to be employed for various purposes through manipulation of the beads, optionally with a console. For example, selected portions of a first data set associated with a first bead can be transferred to a data set associated with a second bead by interfacing both beads consecutively with a console. The console can then be used to enter specific commands for selecting the data to be transferred. In another application, the data sets are used to filter the delivery of programming visible through an electronic program guide for a television. The user holds beads, each corresponding to a criterion or set of criteria to be used for filtering. Heat sensor switches in the beads cause only the held beads to send identifiers uniquely identifying each bead to the console. Identifiers of the corresponding data sets are sent to the media delivery device.

    • A transducer is described especially for use in providing acoustic transmission in a borehole. The transducer includes a multiple number of magnetic circuit gaps and electrical windings that have been found to provide the power necessary for acoustic operation in a borehole while still meeting the stringent dimensional criteria necessitated by boreholes. Various embodiments conforming to the design are described. Moreover, the invention includes transition and reflector sections, as well as a directional coupler and resonator arrangement particularly adapted for borehole acoustic communication. An acoustic communication system is described especially designed for use in providing acoustic transmission of information in a borehole. The communication system comprises a surface transceiver and at least one downhole transceiver. The surface transceiver operates in conjunction with a host computer that sends commands to the downhole transceiver. Subsequently, the downhole transceiver transmits encoded data from subsurface, borehole sensors to the surface transceiver. The preferred embodiment uses Minimum Shift Keying (MSK) modulation for both transmitting commands to the downhole unit and for transmitting data to the surface transceiver. To facilitate operation of a coherent communication system in the inhospitable environment of a borehole, the acoustic channel is characterized to enable the system to choose the best possible frequency and bandwidth for communication transmission. Additionally, the system achieves synchronous operation by transmitting synchronization signals between the downhole transceiver and the surface transceiver prior to the units exchanging commands and data.
