    • Aspects of a method and system for change detection in localization and tracking of objects in a smart video camera are provided. A programmable surveillance video camera comprises processors for detecting objects in a video signal based on an object mask. The processors may generate a textual representation of the video signal by utilizing a description language to indicate characteristics of the detected objects, such as shape, texture, color, and/or motion, for example. The object mask may be based on a detection field value generated for each pixel in the video signal by comparing a first observation field and a second observation field associated with each of the pixels. The first observation field may be based on a difference between an input video signal value and an estimated background value while the second observation field may be based on a temporal difference between first observation fields.

    • An analysis system analyzes and measures patterns present in the pixel values of digital images using a computer-implemented network structure that includes a process hierarchy, a class network and a data network. The data network includes image layers, thematic layers and object networks. Various types of processing are performed depending on whether the data of the digital images is represented in the image, thematic or object layers. Pixel-oriented and object-oriented processing is combined so that fewer computations and less memory are used to analyze the digital images. Pixel-oriented processes, such as filtering, are selectively performed only at pixel locations that are assigned to a specified thematic class of a thematic layer or that are linked to a particular object of the object network. Similarly, object-oriented processing is performed at pixel locations linked to objects generated using thematic layers or using image layers on which pixel-oriented processes have already been performed.

    • A method and system for identifying an object or structured parts of an object in an image. A set of templates are created for each of a number of the parts of the object and the templates are applied to an area of interest in an image where it is hypothesised that an object part is present. The image is analysed to determine the probability that it contains the object part. Thereafter, other templates are applied to other areas of interest in the image to determine the probability that this area of interest belongs to a corresponding object part. The templates are then arranged in a configuration and the likelihood that the configuration represents an object or structured parts of an object is calculated. This is calculated for other configurations and the configuration that is most likely to represent an object or structured part of an object is determined. The method and system can be applied to creating a markerless motion capture system and has other applications in image processing.
