    • When calibrating a transfer assist blade (TAB) in a printer, toner patches are formed on a photoreceptor belt in the printer at locations between sheets of paper. The TAB is partially deployed between paper sheets to pick up toner, and then deployed normally or with a delay to mark the back sides of the sheets. A processor evaluates distances between TAB touchdown and liftoff points and leading and trailing edges of the sheets, and calibrates the TAB to optimize the TAB timing. Additionally, test prints can be generated, each having slightly varied TAB calibration settings that are stored in a non-volatile memory (NVM) table. A user enters an identification number for a test print with the best calibration settings. The processor looks up calibration settings corresponding to the entered identification number and moves NVM settings from the table into operational locations in the system NVM to calibrate the printer.

    • An image forming apparatus for transporting a recording medium on which an image is formed includes a guide plate. The guide plate guides the recording medium to a predetermined position in the image forming apparatus and includes a flexible sheet member and a rigid holding member. The rigid holding member holds the flexible sheet member such that the flexible sheet member projects from a front end of the rigid holding member. The projecting portion of the flexible sheet member includes at least three flexible sub-portions having a different bend-stiffness per unit area from each other, and the bend-stiffness per unit area is reduced toward a downstream side in a sheet guide direction.

    • An image forming apparatus is provided which realizes an adequate operation of a paper dust removing device. The image forming apparatus has a storing portion which stores the likelihood that paper dust is produced upon previous image formation as previous paper dust production information according to the type of sheet. Further, the image forming apparatus has a CPU which adjusts paper dust removing performance upon current image formation to increase based on previous paper dust production information when the likelihood that paper dust is produced upon previous image formation is higher. Consequently, it is possible to realize an adequate paper dust removing operation of the paper dust removing device and prevent problems of images from occurring due to paper dust.
