    • A rotable sprocket assembly transmits force from a chain into rotation of a bicycle wheel. Sprocket segments having peripheral teeth are mounted on a pair of sprocket housings so that the combined periphery of the sprocket segments is substantially circular. The housings are stationary relative to each other and each is oriented in a plane which is normal to a central rotational axis. The sprocket segments are slidable relative to the housing in a radial direction so as to vary the diameter of the combined sprocket segments. Each sprocket segment is formed from a plurality of hinged subsegments, with each subsegment having a single tooth. The sprocket segments of one housing overlap the adjacent sprocket segments on the other housing so that the pairs of overlapping teeth combine to effectively form a single tooth. The sprocket segments are movable angularly relative to the sprocket housings, so that in combination with the radial displacement of the sprocket segments, the total number of effective teeth on the sprocket assembly can be varied in increments of one tooth. The sprocket segments are retained in a desired radial position by a disengageable latch mechanism. A shift actuator causes disengagement of the latch and angular displacement of the sprocket segments to a desired position. Movement of the shift actuator is accomplished manually or automatically through a motor and an electronic control system. The wheel and sprocket assembly permit removal of the wheel without requiring removal of the sprocket assembly.

    • An apparatus for monitoring and warning of an undesirable velocity condition in a rotating shaft includes a magnetic reed switch having on and off domains oriented with respect to an actuation magnet which is displaced on an outward radial path with respect to the shaft by centrifugal force, such that the actuation magnet can pass from within an on domain to within an off domain and vice versa, thereby switching the reed switch on and off according to the speed of rotation of the shaft. The reed switch is connected electrically to a warning light or buzzer or control circuit. An alternative embodiment employs a ferromagnetic shield variously interposed between the actuation magnet and the reed switch in response to centrifugal force.

    • A non-skid brake control system for vehicles, particularly towed vehicles having electrically, pneumatically and/or hydraulically operated brakes controlled from the towing vehicle. A pair of braked wheels of the towed vehicle, one on each side of the vehicle, each have a speed sensing switch to sense the rate of rotation of the associated braked trailer wheel so as to provide anti-skid modulation to the associated brake when differential braking occurs between these braked wheels. The system automatically disables the anti-skid modulation when the vehicle speed is below an adjustable predetermined speed to thereby provide full braking effort under static, hill-holding or low speed conditions. Wheel speed sensing switch constructions are employed which utilize reed switches magnetically actuated by a permanent magnet carried on a centrifugally actuated flyweight mechanism. The anti-skid system may be further modulated by a vehicle speed sensing switch to prevent dual wheel lock-up above a given vehicle speed.

    • Simple inexpensive apparatus senses an overspeed condition of a high speed shaft, of a turbine for example. There is no wearing moving part unless the shaft overspeeds. Then one pivoted part or arm moves a very small degree carrying a cup-shaped reflector into the path of a small jet of fluid. This reflector cup reflects the jet stream to a receiver hole and conduit. The conduit leads off to apparatus which shuts off the engine or reduces the power input until the shaft speed is reduced below the overspeed limit.

    • A system for measuring the speed and length of a moving elongated article, such as a moving wire exiting from an insulating process, includes a roller of precisely measured circumference in frictional contact with the wire, a transducer for generating a precise number of pulses in response to each revolution of the roller and a counting unit for receiving the generated pulses. The circumference of the roller is preset into the counting unit to control a pulse multiplying circuit and a time period during which the pulses are counted. The counted pulses are divided down to render one pulse for each foot of wire moved past the roller and are coupled to a footage counter to indicate the length of wire which may be taken up on a strand take-up apparatus. The transducer pulses may be counted for the variable time period and displayed directly as the foot per minute speed of the wire. Additionally, preset high and low speed tolerance limits may be compared to the measured speed of the wire to activate alarm circuitry for measured speeds falling without the limits. The system may be interfaced with a computer to monitor or control the insulating process.
