    • A metering end-fitting (1) has a metering chamber (30) inside which a piston (24) is slidably mounted, the piston being mounted so as to be able to pass from a first position in which the metering chamber (30) has a maximum volume to a second position in which the metering chamber (30) has a minimum volume. The metering chamber has at least one inlet passage (16, 17) which is open when the piston (24) is in the first position and substantially closed when the piston (24) is in the second position, the piston (24) being coupled to a closure element (50) which, in the first position of the piston (24) substantially closes off at least one outlet passage (15) in the metering chamber (30) and frees the outlet passage (15) when the inlet passage (16, 17) is closed. The closure element (50) moves with a shorter travel than the travel of the piston (24).

    • A device for providing a measured portion of food product on demand in which a portioned metering head has an inlet to receive the food product under pressure and an outlet to discharge the food product onto the food-receiving medium. There is a disk in the housing which has a disk passageway connecting the inlet and outlet passageways of the metering head. Within the disk passageway is a piston which can slide from one end to the other. By rotating the disk, the food product pushes against the piston causing it to push the food product previously within the disk passageway out into the outlet passageway of the metering head. The cycle repeats with the disk rotating 180.degree., once again positioning the piston adjacent to the inlet passageway. A photoelectric eye signals a control mechanism and connected air cylinder to rotate the disk each time a food-receiving medium is disposed under the metering head.

    • A cylinder connects a measuring chamber filled with fuel to a gas pressure chamber set at a constant pressure maintained by a gas pressure device. A displacement member in the form of a piston separates the gas pressure chamber from the measuring chamber. A fuel injector is mounted to communicate with the measuring chamber. A displacement sensor is disposed inside the gas pressure chamber and has a contact member of free-dropping type which contacts with the top surface of the displacement member. A displacement signal from the displacement sensor representing the amount of displacement of the displacement member is supplied to an arithmetic operation unit. A control circuit controls the injection operation of the fuel injector, and supplies a command to the arithmetic operation unit to calculate the injection amount from the amount of displacement.

    • The invention is concerned with a novel container for receiving a liquid material having a fitting at one end adapted to provide a discharge port for the liquid within the container and having at its other end a plunger or piston adapted to be moved within the inside wall of the container to discharge one or more predetermined "aliquots" or "doses" of liquid from the container through the port. The invention also comprises a novel device adapted to receive a liquid-containing cartridge or package of the type just mentioned and having means for coacting with the package to move the plunger within the container during dose-dispensing or -discharge in such a manner as to gradually accelerate movement of the plunger from a position of rest within the container through a maximum rate of motion and then gradually decelerate the motion of the plunger to a final position at the end of the dose-discharge. The device also comprises means for accurately predetermining or "measuring" the amount of liquid discharged during each individual movement of the plunger. The device may comprise means for repeatedly actuating the piston with an accelerating-decelerating movement to discharge a plurality of measured samples repeatedly under non-spurt and non-splash conditions.

    • Method of introducing accurately measured doses of liquid that may, if desired, be varied in size into a product in process of being manufactured by use of a measuring chamber that is filled with the liquid to a level corresponding to the predetermined dose and delivering the dose by superatmospheric pressure displacement. The method is preferably carried out by the use of apparatus which includes a measuring cylinder, a fluid-tight piston movable therein to selected heights to measure out a dose of selected variable size and means to force the liquid into a discharge line leading to the product being made by applying force to the piston in the direction of the opening into the discharge line. The method is particularly useful in dosing a slurry in which the solid particles are kept suspended by agitation before and during the dosing operations. A water flush of the apparatus after each dosing may also be carried out. The method can be used for dosing two or more products or batches of the same product by providing branch delivery lines connected with the delivery line from the measuring cylinder. The operation can be automated, manual or a combination of both.
