    • An apparatus for maintaining a desired air pressure inside a home includes a differential pressure switch/gage having a first port and a second port. The first port is adaptable for sensing a first pressure inside the home; the second port is adaptable for sensing a second pressure outside the home. The differential pressure switch/gage is adaptable for producing a signal in response to a difference between the first pressure and the second pressure. A motorized damper is in signal communication with the differential pressure switch/gage and is operable to control entry of air into the home in response to the signal. A method of maintaining a desired air pressure inside a home comprises sensing a first pressure inside the home, sensing a second pressure outside the home, and introducing air into the home through a controlled opening if said second pressure exceeds said first pressure by a specified amount.

    • A pressure relief door system for use in a duct for relieving positive or negative pressure within the duct includes a frame to be mounted in the duct; a gasket in the frame; a hinged door mounted on the frame and sealing against the gasket; and an adjustable pressure relief mechanism normally holding the hinged door against the gasket and permitting the hinged door to open in response to a positive or negative pressure change. The frame and door can be mounted such that the door opens either outwardly from the duct in response to excess positive pressure or inwardly into the duct in response to excess negative pressure. The adjustable pressure relief mechanism may be magnetic.

    • The present invention provides an airflow control loop that uses averaged airflow measurements without the problems that are normally encountered with averaging measurements, such as the delay introduced into the airflow control loop. This is accomplished, in the present invention, through a predictive control scheme. The predictive control scheme of the airflow control loop calculates the damper sensitivity, calculates the damper runtime needed to achieve setpoint, and then runs the damper for the determined period of time. In addition to the unique airflow control loop used to maintain the constant airflow into the room, the present invention also implements a digital form of proportional, integral, and derivative (PID) control to maintain the room temperature. The digital form of PID control uses non-linear gains which vary according to how far the measured temperature is from setpoint.

In a ventilating system comprising a distribution duct 3, a fan 2 and two or more air outlets 4, 5 adjusted by means of dampers and located at a relatively large distance from the fan, a device is provided for maintaining constant the static pressure in the duct near the outlets, the device consisting of a pressuresensitive means 6 connected to a branch duct narrow in relation to the main duct 3 and disposed close to the fan outlet, the pressuresensitive means 6 controlling a fan output adjusting device 12 through a servomotor 7. Upstream of the means 6 in the branch duct there is a throttle 9 having similar pressure-fall characteristics to that of the distribution duct up to said air outlets and in the outlet of the branch duct a damper 10 operated by the pressure-sensitive means 6 so that the position of the damper 10 will correspond approximately to the average position of the dampers of the air outlets. In operation if dampers of the air outlets are nearly all closed the air consumption will be small, and the output of the fan will be reduced to maintain the desired static pressure near these outlets. The setting of the throttle 9 is adjustable.
