    • A housing has a window with a plurality of panes. There is a light guide member in the form of first and second plates meeting at right angles. The first plate has white indicia painted on it and the light guide member is positioned so that the indicia are viewable in the window, one indicia in each pane. A red arm slides along the first plate on the side opposite the window. The arm is made of light guide material and is attached to a slidable tape and a lever passes through a hole in the tape so that the indicating arm moves in coordination with the lever to provide a red background to the one of the indicia in the window that indicates the position of the lever. A blue plate on the side of the arm opposite the window provides a blue background to the other indicia in the window. The light guide member and the arm are formed so that a single bulb located centrally to and along the edge of the second plate substantially uniformly illuminates the portions of the indicia means, the indicating arm, and the blue plate which are visible in the window.

    • A mark indicator comprises a transparent substrate; a recessed portion formed on a rear face of the transparent substrate and having a tapered shape widened on an open side thereof and having the shape of an indicating medium; and an indicating layer of the indicating medium disposed within the recessed portion. An alternative embodiment comprises an indicating substrate composed of a transparent material; and an indicating layer member disposed on a rear face of the indicating substrate and including an indicating layer having the shape of an indicating medium and substantially a trapezoidal shape in cross section, and a transparent layer disposed in a portion of the indicating layer member except for the indicating layer and substantially having the same thickness as that of the indicating layer. A method for manufacturing a mark indicator comprises the steps of forming a projecting portion in a molding die; setting a film and an indicating layer within the molding die; and flowing a transparent material into the molding die. An alternative method for manufacturing a mark indicator comprises the steps of setting, within a molding die, a film and an indicating layer member which includes an indicating layer and a transparent layer; and flowing a transparent material into the molding die.

    • A vehicle steering column control cable mounting clip for an automatic transmission indicator dial system permitting the indicator pointer to be readily aligned with the dial indicia. The system includes a curvilinear looped flexible plastic tubular conduit having one end molded to the indicator housing and its other end molded to an adjustment slide selectively movable on a tongue portion of the clip by means of an adjustment screw interconnecting the slide and the clip. A flexible cable is slidable within the shielding conduit having one unshielded end connected to a pointer carrier and its other unshielded end fixed to a column rotatable shift tube actuator arm extending through an aperture in the column outer jacket. The clip has a pair of spring legs adapted for snap-in reception into the column jacket aperture and includes an integrally hinged lock-bar operative for positively capturing the clip in the aperture. Rotation of the column shift lever exerts a pull on the cable in one direction against a coil spring biasing the carrier in the opposite direction. By turning the adjustment screw the curvilinear shape of the conduit is altered relative to the inner cable modifying the spring tensioned condition of the cable thereby causing incremental aligning movement of the pointer relative to a selected dial indicia.

    • A hydraulic apparatus for remotely controlling the operative mode selector of a motor vehicle automatic transmission. The apparatus comprises a master cylinder having an input member operatively connected to the transmission operative mode selection or shift lever placed at the disposal of the motor vehicle operator, and a slave cylinder mounted on or proximate the transmission casing and having an output member connected to the transmission operative mode selector, the master cylinder and the slave cylinder being placed in fluid communication through flexible conduits such that each displacement of the master cylinder piston as a result of displacement of the master cylinder input member causes a corresponding displacement of the slave cylinder piston coupled to the slave cylinder output member. After assembly of the components, the apparatus is filled with hydraulic fluid and, preferably, break-away restraining straps are installed to hold the master cylinder input member and the slave cylinder output member against extension beyond a limit.

    • An optimum shift timing indicating device for a vehicle includes: a speed sensor for detecting a rotational speed of an engine or a running speed of the vehicle; a load sensor for detecting an engine load; a data processing device having a data map or maps fewer in number than gear positions of the vehicle transmission, said data map or maps having a set shift-up region and/or shift-down region selected in accordance with the rotational speed of the engine or the running speed of the vehicle and the engine load, for emitting a shift-up instruction signal and/or a shift-down instruction signal in accordance with the rotational speed of the engine or the running speed of the vehicle and the engine load; and a shift instructing device for giving a driver a shift-up instruction and/or a shift-down instruction in response to an output from said data processing device; so that instruction about the optimum shift timing can be given to the driver with the use of only a small memory capacity.
