    • An apparatus and a method are provided for obtaining electrical power from activities, e.g., walking and running, of a user. In one example, the apparatus includes first and second compressible bladders; a fluid containing column coupled between the first and second compressible bladders; a magnetic piston disposed in the fluid containing column, the magnetic piston being shaped to conform with an internal cross section of the cylinder and movable in the cylinder along a longitudinal direction of the cylinder, wherein the magnetic piston comprises a plurality of magnets with similar poles facing each other and separated by one or more pole pieces, the magnets being axially magnetized along the longitudinal direction; one or more wire windings disposed proximate the magnetic piston; and an electric charge storage electrically coupled to said one or more wire windings.

    • Methods and apparatus are disclosed for harvesting energy from motion of one or more joints. Energy harvesters comprise: a generator for converting mechanical energy into corresponding electrical energy; one or more sensors for sensing one or more corresponding characteristics associated with motion of the one or more joints; and control circuitry connected to receive the one or more sensed characteristics and configured to assess, based at least in part on the one or more sensed characteristics, whether motion of the one or more joints is associated with mutualistic conditions or non-mutualistic conditions. If conditions are determined to be mutualistic, energy harvesting is engaged. If conditions are determined to be non-mutualistic, energy harvesting is disengaged.

    • An energy harvesting apparatus utilizes a modular structure to preserve the proper alignment between a chain of energy-producing elements and an energy-producing channel (within which the chain is located and free to slide along, creating electrical energy from mechanical movement). The channel includes a plurality of rigid modules that are separated by flexible segments of tubing. The rigid channel modules house the energy-producing electrodes and/or coils. The chain includes a plurality of rigid modules that are attached along a flexible string in a spaced-apart configuration. The rigid chain modules house the energy-producing magnets and/or conductive droplets. The combination of the flexible channel segments and chain string allow for freedom of motion of the apparatus (required for human locomotion, for example), while providing the desired “fixed” alignment between the rigid energy-producing modules.
