    • A number of embodiments of direct injected V-type outboard motors provided with a very effective fuel supply system wherein the number of components can be significantly reduced as well as the elimination of many of the flexible conduits normally employed. This also permits the fuel system to be assembled as a relatively unitary assembly that can be then affixed to the engine. The arrangement is such that purging of the system from vapors during shutdowns is easily accomplished and the system can be purged without complicated construction. Furthermore, the system can be pressure tested by an arrangement where the low pressure system can bypass the high pressure system when the engine is not operating so as to be pressurized for testing purposes. However, when the high pressure system operates, then the bypass line will be closed by the shunting valve arrangement. The direct injection system permits operation with two cycle engines even under low load and speed conditions by using residual gasses to assist in fuel vaporization. The high pressure pump and its drive are also provided with a cooling system.

    • A fuel supply system is disclosed for a direct injected “V” type engine powering an outboard motor. The fuel supply system includes a pump for supplying fuel from a tank to a vapor separator. An electrical pump delivers fuel from the vapor separator to a mechanical high pressure pump, which delivers fuel under high pressure to a fuel manifold and further to a pair of fuel rails. The fuel rails supply fuel to fuel injectors for delivering fuel to the combustion chambers of the engine. Recesses are formed on a side of each cylinder head and one fuel rail is positioned within each recess. The mechanical high pressure pump is positioned vertically above the uppermost fuel injector so that any fuel vapor within the fuel rails will rise toward the fuel pump. Fuel vapor that accumulates within the high pressure fuel pump is returned to the vapor separator.

    • In a high-pressure fuel supplying apparatus, fuel is pumped from a fuel tank by a feed pump into a fuel gallery of a high-pressure pump via a low-pressure fuel passage. The low-pressure fuel passage can include a reservoir chamber that is formed by vertically upwardly expanding a portion of the passage located near the fuel gallery. The reservoir chamber is located above an upper end of the fuel gallery in a vertical direction. A communication passage, forming a portion of the low-pressure fuel passage, can be connected at one end thereof to an upper end portion of the fuel gallery. Another end portion of the communication passage extends diagonally upward from the upper end portion of the fuel gallery, and connects to the reservoir chamber. According to other embodiments, the reservoir chamber can be omitted as long as a portion of the communication passage is provided vertically above an upper end of the fuel gallery. Alternatively, the communication passage can lead to (and convey the fuel vapor produced in the fuel gallery to) an auxiliary injector or to a dedicated reservoir chamber that is separate from the low-pressure fuel passage.

    • A fuel and lubricant supply system for an engine of the type utilized to power an outboard motor of a watercraft is disclosed. The system includes a fuel supply and a delivery mechanism for delivering fuel from the supply through a fuel system including at least one charge former. The system also includes a lubricant supply and a delivery mechanism for delivering lubricant from the supply through a lubricant system to at least a portion of the fuel system. A fluid pressure operated check valve is provided along the lubricant system for preventing the flow of fuel into the lubricant system. Preferably, the check valve includes a fluid sensor providing data to a control unit which controls the lubricant delivery mechanism for controlling the volume of lubricant delivered to the fuel system.

The control valve may be a three way valve for controlling the expansion of the variable volume of the expandable chamber The leak prevention device includes a housing assembly connected with a fuel drain and contains an outlet passage fluidically connected at one end with the variable volume and at the other end with the fuel drain and an outlet check valve for allowing fuel to flow in only one direction from the variable volume into the fuel drain. A control circuit is provided to energize solenoids for operating the shut off valve and control valve.

    • A fuel system for a diesel engine includes an air purging system for venting trapped air to a vent line connected to a fuel tank and an emergency shut-down system for providing a fail-safe shut-down of the engine when fuel is low. The air-purging system comprises a device defining a float chamber having an air outlet communicating with the vent line, a fuel inlet, and a fuel outlet. A float is disposed in the chamber and is adapted to move between a normal first position closing the air outlet, an emergency intermediate second position opening both the air and fuel outlets, and a shut-down third position opening the air outlet and closing the fuel outlet. The emergency shut-down system includes electronic and pressure sensitive switches, warning lights, and an auxiliary fuel pump to monitor and control the shut-down and restart modes of engine operation. The air purging system is adapted to function independently of the emergency shut-down system.
