    • A rotary pump such as a rotary fuel injection pump comprises a pump body; a rotor rotatably supported by the pump body and responsive to mechanical pulses to pump a fluid; and a stator ring (208) supported by the pump body and having a ring of projections (209) arranged to deliver mechanical pulses to the rotor when the rotor rotates relative to the stator ring. The stator ring (208) has a vibrational mode which is induced by delivering the mechanical pulses to the rotor. The pump body supports the stator ring across an interface which is a complete annulus or a partial annulus. In order to reduce the transmission of vibration from the stator ring to the pump body, the interface and/or stator ring incorporate cavities at the antinodes of the vibrational mode of the stator ring.

    • A fuel injection pump for internal combustion engines, which includes at least one pump piston driven by a cam drive mechanism to carry out a feed stroke and an intake stroke. The pump includes a fuel filled storage chamber that is under storage pressure and is for aspirating fuel in the intake stroke and for feeding excess fuel at the end of the feed stroke to a tank. A fluid filled drive mechanism chamber under lubrication pressure, contains the cam drive mechanism and is divided from the intake chamber by a movable wall. A vacuum chamber is disposed in the fluid filled drive mechanism chamber in order to damp pressure oscillations in the drive mechanism chamber, the vacuum chamber is at least partially defined by a membrane that is acted upon by the lubrication pressure. The rigidity of the membrane is designed so that its effectiveness comes into play only when there is a pressure load that is slightly greater than the stationary lubrication pressure in the drive mechanism chamber (22).

    • To provide a fuel injection pump which can sufficiently and stably supply fuel to a fuel pressurization chamber during a fuel intake stroke, a plunger chamber, a spill port and a spill passage are mutually communicable, while a reflux passage, an intake gallery, an intake passage, an intake port and the plunger chamber are mutually communicable. A reflux passage communicates with a damping chamber through a communication passage. The spill passage and the reflux passage communicate with each other, and when a spill valve opens, high-pressure fuel within the plunger chamber spills from the spill valve and into the intake gallery through the reflux passage, causing pulsation having a pressure level difference to the spill fuel. When the pulsation wave passes through the damping chamber, as the level difference in the pulsation wave is reduced, a sufficient quantity of fuel can stably be supplied from the intake gallery to the plunger chamber.

    • A fuel injection pump apparatus has a cam ring angularly adjustable within a housing in which is also mounted a rotary drive shaft having an enlarged piston provided with teeth about its periphery. A transducer is provided to sense the passage of the teeth and this includes a part fixed on the housing and a second part mounted on the cam ring. The first part defines a pair of pole pieces which have opposite magnetic polarity and the second part carries a pair of magnetizable plates which remain in close proximity to the pole pieces, the plates defining projections which are in close proximity to the teeth. A sensing coil is provided in the first component and provides a signal as the reluctance between the projections varies as the teeth move past the projections.

    • A fuel injection pump having an inlet metering valve for supplying a metered quantity of fuel from a transfer pump to a pumping chamber and an auxiliary control system for limiting the maximum quantity of fuel supplied to the pumping chamber via the inlet metering valve. An auxiliary valve piston is axially shiftable by the transfer pump outlet pressure to provide a variable restriction between the transfer pump and metering valve for establishing a maximum fuel quantity limit within a predetermined speed range of the pump. A low-speed fuel passage is provided in parallel with the variable restriction for establishing a maximum fuel quantity limit within a lower speed range. The back pressure chambers of the auxiliary valve piston, a transfer pressure regulator piston and a pump timing piston are connected to a pump housing cavity to equalize the back pressures in those chambers at the same constant pressure maintained by a housing pressure regulator.

    • A liquid fuel injection pumping apparatus of the rotary distributor type has two forms of cam lobe on its cam ring. The first form of cam lobe is a pumping lobe which can effect inward movement of a plunger to achieve pumping of fuel and after the crest of the lobe has been passed allows outward movement of the plunger to lower the fuel pressure in the various passages in the apparatus. The other form of lobe is a holding lobe which while one plunger is being moved inwardly holds another plunger against movement. When the crest of the holding lobe is reached the associated plunger is allowed to move outwardly and this movement is arranged to take place shortly before the end of the inward movement of the plunger associated with a pumping lobe. The effect is to reduce the period towards the end of fuel delivery at which fuel is supplied at a reducing rate.
