    • A reciprocating rotary drill bit is disclosed to include a coupling member for coupling the drill bit to a source of drill bit drive power and a cutter member for drilling into a workpiece. The coupling member and the cutter member are slidably associated and include overlapping protruding portions which delimit the upward and downward travel of the cutter member with respect to the coupling member. The slidable association permits reciprocation of the cutter member with respect to the coupling member as the drill bit is rotated into the workpiece. The coupling member also includes protrusions which extend into grooves defined in the cutter member to rotationally secure the two members whereby the cutter member rotates when the coupling member rotates.

    • The present invention relates to an apparatus for drilling holes in the ground. The apparatus comprises a cylindrical drilling tool having one end coupled to a motor assembly for rotating the tool by way of an elongate rotatable sleeve. A hydraulic jack is disposed in the sleeve for rotation therewith. The piston rod of the jack extends longitudinally of the drilling tool and carries a valve-action member arranged to allow drilled material to enter the drilling tool and to retain the material therein. The piston rod is movable longitudinally relative to said tool for the discharge of said material.The apparatus of the invention is able to drill holes rapidly in a large variety of soils.

    • An earth boring machine with a rotating cutter head having a multiple of individual cutters positioned at different distances from the center of rotation and angularly spaced from one another on the cutter head while the cutter head itself is shaped to direct the cuttings into a collecting area, which may be under the center of the rotary head or which may be concentric about the center area, has elevator means, which may be mechanical, hydraulic or pneumatic, to remove the cuttings from the collection area, and has one or more crushing rollers thereon arranged to crush cuttings which are too large for effective removal by the elevator means into small chips or fragments together with barrier means for restraining such oversize pieces in the path of the crushing roll or rollers so as to prevent their entry into the collection area until they have been adequately crushed. The barrier means so provided are arranged to permit the smaller fragments and chips to move into the collection area with little impedance.

    • A method of drilling bore holes which enables a cylindrical solid core sample to be obtained from a formation. A coring bit together with a core barrel and concentrically arranged drill pipe provides central and annular passageways. The annular passageway is used for circulating fluid to the bit and back up the bore hole annulus while the central passageway provides for the return of drilling fluid and cores. The circulating fluid is forced down through the drill string annulus to the drill bit, and back up through the hole annulus to thereby remove debris and cool the bit in an improved manner. The cores which have been cut by the bit are accumulated within the core barrel and from time to time the pressure of the drilling fluid is increased while the central passageway is opened to the flow of fluid, thereby forcing the fluid to flow into and up through the central passageway, carrying the accumulated cores therewith. A predetermined pressure drop is maintained across the face of the diamond bit by adjusting the bearing pressure thereof with respect to the formation to thereby enable the bit to cooperate with the formation in a manner analogous to the action of a valve.
