    • Methods for pre-shaping paint film laminates and co-molding processes using such laminates are disclosed. The methods comprise the steps of providing (e.g., forming or procuring) a plastic paint film laminate, softening the paint film laminate with heat such that one or more localized portions of the member absorb more heat than the remainder, and deforming the plastic film member to form a pre-shaped article. The formation of different heat absorption areas on the paint film laminate is referred to as the provision of heat sink areas. These heat sink areas can be provided for example by surface coating of heat retention means such as black paint or ink pigments on localized areas of the surface of the laminate followed by uniform heating of the laminate in an oven or the like or the sheet can be heated in localized areas to a greater extent (i.e. time and/or temperature) than in remainder portions by the means of heat guns or the like. In either case, the result is that certain desired portions of the paint film absorb more heat than the remainder sections. The heat sink portions are deformed in either a pre-shaping step or in the molding step. When the heat sink portions are placed adjacent mold sections adapted to form a given surface continuity, the portions of the laminate bordering the heat sink portions exhibit gloss consistent with other show surfaces of the co-molded part.

    • A motor vehicle bumper for energy absorption. A support part of the bumper is supportable on the vehicle and is generally U-shaped with horizontally extending arms. A cover supported on the support includes respective wall sections that extend in from the top and bottom of the cover and cooperate with vertically outwardly extending flanges on the legs of the U. The wall sections of the cover are simply locked to the flanges of the support. A body of energy absorbing material is disposed in the cover and in the support and is pressed against the wall sections of the cover upon deformation of the cover by application of more than a predetermined force to press the energy absorbing material against the cover wall sections to prevent those wall sections from separating from the flanges of the legs of the U-shaped support in the event of collision or application of more than a predetermined force to the cover of the bumper.

    • A bumper arrangement for an automotive vehicle is disclosed which includes a bending-resistant bumper support resting on parts affixed to the vehicle, an undulating leaf spring extending over the length of the bumper arranged in front of this bumper support, and a cover which can be locked to the bumper support and which serves to hide the leaf spring from view. The leaf spring is fashioned integrally with the bumper support, and is preferably made of a reinforced synthetic resin. The wavy windings of the leaf spring are aligned in the support zone extending transversely with respect to the automotive vehicle, in the longitudinal vehicle direction, and, in the laterally wrapped-around end zones of the support, approximately in the transverse vehicle direction. Energy absorbing elements and impact buffers are interposed between the undulations of the leaf spring and between the bearing support and the adjacent section of the leaf spring.

    • A bumper for a motor vehicle, with the bumper being equipped with an energy absorber provided along a rear surface thereof with at least one recess. The energy absorber is disposed forwardly of a girder subjected to bending, with the girder being attached to a vehicle. The recesses are arranged in such a manner that an impact force is transmitted to the body of the motor vehicle with as little moment as possible so as to prevent a tilting of the bumper and associated motor vehicle parts such as a fender of the vehicle. With a bumper girder subjected to bending being mounted forwardly of the energy absorber, at least portions of the recesses diagonally face the area of incidence of the impact force. If the impact is directly incident on the energy absorber, the recesses lie in an extension of a direction of the point of application of the impact forces.

    • The fiberglass reinforced plastics bumper reinforcement fitted with an elastic bumper--which is laterally mounted to the vehicle and which consists, in cross section, of a plurality of rectangular frames stacked in layer--is characterized by forwardly projecting strips formed at the intersections between the front wall of the bumper reinforcement and the top and bottom plates of the reinforcement as well as the horizontally extending webs. These projecting strips on the front wall of the bumper reinforcement alleviate the stress concentrations at these intersections that might be caused when an impact load is applied to the elastic bumper and therefore the bumper reinforcement, thus increasing the fracture strength of the intersections of the bumper reinforcement. The bumper reinforcement is further characterized in that at least one of the top and bottom projecting strips is provided with a protrusion raised upward or downward from the outer surface of the top or bottom plate to further reduce the stress concentration at the intersections.
