摘要： A filtration device is provided for withdrawing permeate essentially continuously from a multicomponent aqueous substrate containing growing microorganisms in a reservoir. A vertical skein of fiber is scrubbed with coarse bubbles which emanate from a conversion baffle positioned under the skein. The substrate is aerated with fine bubbles in a size range small enough to transfer oxygen to the substrate efficiently. The baffle traps the fine bubbles and converts them to coarse bubbles which are effective to scrub the fibers. In the most preferred embodiment, the finished headers of the skein are derived from composite headers comprising a fixing lamina of resin in which the fibers are potted near their terminal ends, and a fugitive lamina of fugitive powdery material in which the terminal ends of the fibers are potted. The fugitive lamina is removed, preferably by dissolving the powder, e.g. finely divided common salt in water.

摘要： An extracorporeal blood oxygenation device having a sealed casing containing a bundle comprised of a plurality of gas permeable tubes for efficient gas transfer. The bundle is woven from tubes having at least two different sizes, at least the smaller diameter tubes being gas permeable. The tubes are relatively non-thrombogenic and are open at each end to an enclosed annular chamber having attached input and output fittings. Oxygen-rich gas flows into one annular chamber through an input fitting before flowing through the gas permeable tubes. Venous blood to be oxygenated is introduced into the sealed casing directly into the center of the bundle for dispersement radially outward through the bundle and across the gas permeable tubes wherein the blood comes in contact with the membrane surface of the gas permeable tubes and exchanges carbon dioxide for oxygen across that surface before being collected from around the perimeter of the bundle for return to the patient.

摘要： A woven hollow tape, for use in exchange devices such as blood oxygenators and heat exchangers, having weft threads and hollow fibers as warp threads, formed as a double weft tape, in which one tape edge is formed as a knitted edge and the weft density is much less than that found in normal woven textile tapes, each weft being spaced apart from the adjacent wefts. The tape is produced by a weft insertion that takes place in a manner similar to that of a shuttleless ribbon loom, especially a needle ribbon loom, preferably using freshly spun hollow fibers. The resultant tape may have hollow fibers along both edges and may be used to form the appropriate products either with or without the weft threads which are easily removed as a result of the tape structure.
