    • A body implantable ventricular cardioverting system. Circuitry is provided which detects the onset of a malignant ventricular tachyarrhythmia and provides a cardioverting signal in response thereto. The cardioverting signal has an energy level that is high relative to the pacing threshhold but below that necessary for defibrillation. In this manner, a ventricular tachyarrhythmia can be cardioverted before the onset of fibrillation and at a lower energy than required for defibrillation. Dependent on such factors as patient threshholds, the tissue/electrode interface and the electrode system employed, the energy level of the cardioverting signal is from 5 millijoules to 15 joules. The system can be configured such that increasingly malignant tachyarrhythmias result in higher energy cardioverting signals, including signals capable of defibrillation. Successful cardioversion with a signal having an energy level lower than necessary for defibrillation reduces the physical damage to the heart as well as the trauma to and discomfort of the patient.

    • Multiple sensing configurations may be qualified based on one induced tachyarrhythmia, e.g., ventricular fibrillation, or other qualification event during an implantation procedure. Each sensing configuration comprises a different combination of two or more electrodes used for sensing electrical signals of the heart of the patient. In some examples, an implantable medical device or other device generates qualification information for each sensing configuration, which may indicate whether the sensing configuration is qualified for subsequent cardiac event detection based on an accuracy of the cardiac event detection for the sensing configuration during the qualification event. One of the qualified configurations may initially be selected as a primary sensing configuration for subsequent cardiac event detection. Switching to an alternate sensing configuration, e.g., upon identification of any sensing integrity condition of the primary sensing configuration, may be expedited by the previous collection of qualification data for at least one other sensing configuration.

    • A method of performing a medical procedure, such as surgery, is provided. A nerve is stimulated in order to adjust the beating of the heart to a first condition, such as a stopped or slowed condition. The medical procedure is performed on the heart or another organ. The stimulation of the nerve is stopped in order to adjust the beating of the heart to a second condition, such as a beating condition. The heart itself may also be stimulated to a beating condition, such as by pacing. The stimulation of the nerve may be continued in order to allow the medical procedure to be continued. A sensor to sense a characteristic of a fluid or tissue, such as an impending contraction, may be also used during the medical procedure. Systems and devices for performing the medical procedure are also provided.
