摘要： Disclosed are apparatuses and methods for improving the impact performance of helmets. The disclosed apparatuses and methods allow the head to move within the helmet but dissipate forces upon the head in a plurality of directions using compressible impact-dissipating elements. The compressible impact-dissipating elements are disposed on a base between the head and an outer shell of the helmet. The compressible impact-dissipating elements are attached to the base that is configured to adapt to the interior size/shape of the helmet with which they are used. The compressible impact-dissipating elements are compressible preferably at least 50% of their “short-axis” dimension, and are also preferably capable of movement in a plurality of directions by the use of appropriate attachment elements allowing for such movement.

摘要： A helmet is disclosed having a padding element removably constrained to the shell and provided with a first seat so that a first protrusion integral with the shell is reversibly engaged, reversibly-coupling male-female means to reversibly male-female couple the shell and the padding element, which are adapted to define a hinge point for the relative rotation between the shell and the padding element. The helmet has restraining means to selectively restrain and release the first protrusion in and from the first seat. The restraining means are movable between a first restraint position to restrain the first protrusion in the first seat, so that the relative rotation between the shell and the padding element is prevented. A second disengagement position of the first protrusion from the first seat is also provided so that the relative rotation between the shell and the padding element is allowed.

摘要： Protective headgear apparatus (such as a helmet used for contact sports) is formed to comprise a non-rigid outer shell in the form of multiple layers of open-cell foam, each layer having a different density. A flexible, lightweight metal frame (i.e., a “cage”) is disposed to contact the inner surface of the outer shell (i.e., bonded in a manner that essentially “locks” the frame to the foam layer), and an open-cell foam cushion layer (in a waffle-like pattern) is bonded to the exposed surface of the metal frame. The various foam layers are preferably impregnated with activated carbon particles that electrostatically absorb (i.e., “capture”) the energy caused by blows to the outer shell. The captured energy is thereafter distributed throughout the volume of the foam layer itself, so as to minimize the amount of energy that reaches the wearer's head.

The internal padding assembly includes a brow pad having first and second peripheral connection portions. The internal padding assembly also includes first and second jaw pads, each having an upper connection portion that mates with the first and second connection portions, respectively, of the brow pad. The internal padding assembly also includes a crown assembly with pad elements that include an internal separation layer that partitions the element into a first inflatable section and a section un-inflatable section. The connection portion of the jaw pads also mates with frontal pad elements of the crown assembly. The internal padding assembly further includes an occipital pad assembly that engages the helmet wearer's head below the occipital bone.

摘要： Pads on an interior of a helmet contact portions of a wearer's head to secure the helmet to the wearer's head. To simplify removal of the helmet from the wearer's head, an exterior surface of a helmet includes an opening and a pad, or a receptacle plate to which a pad is coupled, includes a fastener opening. The opening in the helmet and the fastener opening in the pad are aligned and a fastener is inserted into the opening in the helmet so fastener is also inserted to the fastener opening in the pad, securing the pad to an interior surface of the helmet. To remove the pad from the interior of the helmet, the fastener is removed from the fastener opening in the pad. As the fastener is accessible from the exterior surface of the helmet, the pad may be removed with minimal movement of the wearer's head.
