    • An improved operator for a high-voltage switch. Prior art operators have a drive member connected to the switch for operation thereof. Immediately after the switch is opened, the drive member is held by a first latch and a spring is automatically charged to bias the drive member to close the switch. When the first latch selectively releases the drive member, it moves to close the switch. Immediately thereafter, the drive member is again held by a second latch and the spring is automatically charged to bias the drive member to open the switch. When the second latch releases the drive member, it now moves to open the switch. In prior art operators the latches sometimes fail to immediately hold the drive member rendering ineffective attempts to recharge the spring. A control system is provided which permits charging of the spring only if the respective latches hold the drive member following a switch operation. The system also reinitiates the prior charging of the spring if, after the drive member moves to operate the switch, the respective latches do not hold the drive member. Reinitiation of the spring charging holds the drive member until the latches succeed in holding it.

    • An improved circuit interrupting device extinguishes an arc by directing a dielectric fluid at the arc as it is elongated. Elongation is effected by relative movement apart of a pair of contacts between which the arc is established. A reservoir contains a piston which defines a first volume and a second volume. The fluid is held under pressure in the second volume. The reservoir directs the fluid in the second volume at the arc from a port normally closed by a diaphragm. One contact is normally mechanically attached to the diaphragm and is adjacent the other contact which is on the reservoir. Sudden expansion of the first volume, such as by the ignition of a power cartridge, forcefully moves the reservoir relative to the piston and away from the one contact. The seal is torn or cut open to permit the pressurized fluid to flow from the port simultaneously with the piston forcing the fluid from the second volume and the movement apart of the contacts.

    • An integrally molded current limiting fuse body having surface elongating skirts integrally molded thereto to increase the surface leakage distance may be used in conjunction with various types of end closures for one or both of the ends of the fuse body. One type of end closure utilizes a metallic end cap to which the mounting studs of the fuse are attached which has an annular flange formed to the edge thereof which is folded over the end of the fuse body to lock the fuse cap over the open end of the fuse body. Another type of end enclosure comprises a molded plastic end cap which can be locked to the end of the fuse housing by a suitable adhesive. The mounting stud may be either attached to the plastic end cap by a threaded nut or may be integrally molded into the end cap. Another type of end closure comprises a metallic plate that overlies the open end of the fuse body and which is held over the open end of the fuse body by a threaded annular flange arrangement which engages threads on the fuse body. One end of the fuse body may have an integrally molded end wall through which a mounting stud may be mounted either by a threaded nut or by molding.

    • An improved support assembly for a circuit-interrupting device is disclosed. The device is of a type having first and second end fittings which define a major axis and which are selectively engageable and disengageable from matching first and second mountings spaced apart in the assembly in insulated relation. The device can be manipulated by a hookstick selectively attachable to the first end fitting and held by a human operator, and so manipulated as to selectively engage and disengage the end fittings and their respective mountings and to open and close the device. The second mounting has a noncircular pin which can be slideably received in a slot in the second end fitting only when the second end fitting and the device are in one particular orientation. The slot contains an enlargement which permits the second end fitting to rotate in the second mounting once the pin enters the enlargement. When the pin is in the enlargement, the device is freely rotatable to both the closed position and the opened position. A cradle, provided on the second mounting for supporting the device, is utilized at two times. First, the cradle supports the device when the second end fitting is being engaged with the second mounting. It performs such support function to automatically place the second end fitting in the one orientation in which it may slideably engage the end fitting. Second, the cradle arrests rotation of, and supports, the device following an opening operation during which the first end fitting is disengaged from the first mounting. Such arresting and support function also automatically aligns the pin in the slot so that the device may be removed from the second mounting.

    • A sensing device is connected to an intermediate tap point on each phase leg of a polyphase system such as a grounded wye-connected capacitor bank to detect faulted capacitor units and thereby control a switching device to isolate the capacitor bank. The intermediate tap point is selected in each phase leg such that the number of series units (such as parallel capacitor groups) above the tap point equals (or exceeds by one) the number of series units below the tap point. The outputs of these sensing devices are coupled through a calibration network to a summing amplifier which operates to add the three signals vectorily to produce on AC output signal that is filtered by a 60 Hz band pass filter to attenuate unwanted harmonics and noise which might introduce error into the measurement. Initial balance is achieved by adjusting the magnitude of each phase to ground signal to equalize those signals from each of the intermediate tap points. By this adjustment, the output signal of the summing amplifier and filter is then proportional to the percent unbalance among the three intermediate tap point voltages. The percent unbalance output signal is directly related to the change in voltage occurring at the tap point due to faulted capacitor units. When the unbalance persists for a preselected time period, an alarm or a switching device is actuated to isolate and protect the capacitor bank.

    • A compact voltage sensing device for connection to an alternating current high voltage circuit is imbedded within an organic polymeric insulator body that is formed to provide both mechanism support and "line to ground" insulation for a conductor or component connected thereto. The voltage sensing device comprises a capacitor and step-down transformer in series from the conductor to ground which provides a low voltage output which may be used to determine the magnitude of the voltage on the conductor, or as a source of control voltage for auxiliary apparatus. The insulator body may be made to be equal in height and have the same mounting configuration as a conventional insulator so that it can be substituted for a conventional insulator in a distribution system. The performance of the insulator body as insulation is not compromised by the presence of internal electrical components.

    • An improvement in an exhaust device to absorb the energy of exhaust gases released during operation of a circuit interrupting device such as a power fuse or an expulsion fuse is disclosed. The exhaust control device includes a hollow housing coated with a corrosion resistant coating mounted to the circuit interrupting device by means of an adapter, composed of a corrosion resistant material such as brass, which is retained in a counterbore within the housing by rolling or folding over the extended upper rim of the housing so that the coating is not damaged. Alternatively, a steel header, welded to and plated along with the steel housing shell, within which the threaded brass adapter is installed, may also be used. The same rolling or folding operation may be used to secure a plated outlet end wall. Baffles positioned within the housing for partitioning the housing into chambers for cooling and filtering the hot exhaust gases, for changing the direction of flow of the gases and for attenuating sound are held in place by crimping the hollow housing around the baffles so that the plating is not damaged. An annular expansion space formed between the hollow housing and an inner cylindrical shell increases the surface area of the hollow housing which is exposed to the blast of exhaust gases emitted from the fuse and provides an additional expansion chamber for receiving the exhaust gases produced by the interrupting device. A labyrinth plate with circumferential notches formed therein and arcuate ridges formed within and adjacent to said notches, forms gas diverting channels and a labyrinth flow pattern exhaust path to the exit ports formed within an outlet end wall.
