    • A film transporting device transports photographic film by driving a spool of a cartridge and a takeup spool which takes up the photographic film supplied from the cartridge by means of a single motor which is rotatable forward and backward. Unidirectional rotational driving force is transmitted from the motor to the spool and the takeup spool via one planet gear mechanism, and the photographic film is supplied from the cartridge, and then the takeup spool takes up the photographic film. The rotational driving force from the motor in the other direction is transmitted to the spool via the planet gear mechanism, and the photographic film is rewound into the cartridge. When the takeup spool takes up the photographic film, a one way clutch can absorb a difference of the transport speed between the takeup spool and the spool of the cartridge.

    • A photographic camera and method for assembling a photographic camera are disclosed. The photographic camera includes a novel mounting structure for a film passage forming plate, which may have components such as a photosensor, a magnetic head, and a film advance control substrate mounted thereon. The film passage forming plate is flexibly attached to a camera body such that it may be moved away from the camera aperture formed in the camera body while initial focusing and testing is conducted after assembly of the camera. In addition, the photographic camera includes a first control substrate carried by the camera body that is electrically connected to the film advance control substrate by a flexible wiring plate which serves to flexibly attach the film passage forming plate to the camera body so that the film passage forming plate may be moved away from the camera aperture after the film advance control substrate is wired to the camera.

    • A film transporter is coupled to a counter which counts the number of used film frames. A film detector detects a film when the count signal is "0," i.e., a state where the counter for counting the number of used film frames is reset. When it is detected that the camera has no film roll loaded therein, the film transporter is disabled to advance or rewind the film roll. There is provided a film travel detector adapted to stop further travel of the film roll after the number of pulses output every time the film roll travels by one frame has reached a predetermined number and, when the camera has the film roll loaded therein, the predetermined number is changed depending whether the count signal is "0," so that a common control system effects initial film advance and advance of each frame following the initial film advance.

    • A zoom lens system shifts the position of front and rear lens groups relative to each other in the direction of the optical axis to change its focal length, by moving a lens barrel back and forth in the axial direction. The lens barrel is formed with cutouts in its rear portion for receiving therein parts and elements projecting forwardly from the plane in which an exposure aperture is located when the lens barrel is retracted, so as to reduce the thickness of the camera with the retracted zoom lens. A focal length changing mechanism comprises a fixed cam and a lever attached to the lens barrel which is turned by the cam when the lens barrel moves back and forth to shift one lens group, thereby changing the focal length of the zoom lens to desired focal lengths. To correct the changes in focus of the zoom lens caused by the change of focal length, an adjusting member is provided in the focal length changing mechanism. An encoder is provided in the camera to detect the shifted axial positions of the lens barrel.
