摘要： The proton conducting capability of a proton exchange membrane is improved where the polymeric membrane material has a continuous non-ionic phase which provides the molecular backbone of the membrane and ionic phase clusters which provide the basis for proton exchange when the membrane is infiltrated with water or the like. In the formation of the membrane, the polymeric material is placed in a state in which the polymer chain segments are mobile and the ionic phase portions are aligned by application of an alternating electric field applied transverse or normal to the surfaces of the membrane. The aligned ionic phase increases the conductivity of the membrane in the direction through its thickness.

摘要： The present invention provides an electrically conductive element for an electrochemical cell element having enhanced protection for an underlying metal substrate with a surface susceptible to forming metal oxides. One or more regions of the surface are coated with a metal coating overlaid with an adhesion promoting coating comprising a silicon containing material derived from organosilanes. The adhesion promoting coating is overlaid with a conductive, protective polymeric coating. The present invention further provides methods of making such an electrochemical cell element to have improved adhesion of conductive, protective polymer coatings.

摘要： The present invention provides a fuel cell electrically conductive element with a polymeric surface comprising a flow field, at least a part of the flow field having a grafted, permanently hydrophilic, polymer coating. The element is made by applying a layer of a monomer mixture of a hydrophilic, ethylenically-unsaturated monomer and a crosslinking monomer to the electrically conductive element surface and polymerizing the applied monomer mixture layer with a plasma whereby the polymerized layer is grafted to the polymeric surface.

摘要： Methods for making battery electrode system are disclosed herein. In an example of the method, a mixture of a polymer binder, an active material and a conductive filler is deposited on a current collector. The deposited mixture is exposed to an external field having a field direction that is normal to a surface of the current collector. The exposure aligns, outward from and normal to the surface of the current collector, the active material and the conductive filler to form a plurality of discrete structures that extend outward from and normal to the surface of the current collector and are respectively aligned with a field line of the external field. Each of the plurality of discrete structures includes some of the active material and some of the conductive filler.
