    • A wireless communications device, and a method of operating a wireless communications device, the device operative to receive broadcast system information from a network, the device being arranged to: receive first broadcast system information, said first broadcast system information defining scheduling information for a plurality of items of further broadcast system information; define a subset containing a plurality of items of further broadcast system information; receive an item of further broadcast system information relating to whether transmit diversity is in use; when it is determined that the device has received further broadcast system information relating to whether transmit diversity is in use, wait until one of the following conditions has been met before implementing on the device any changes in transmit diversity as defined by the further broadcast system information relating to whether transmit diversity is in use: i) the device having received all members of the subset of further broadcast system information; or ii) the quality of a signal received by the device being determined to be below a threshold.

    • The present invention concerns a method of processing traffic data in Layer 2 of a wireless communications system, whereby the MAC layer is arranged, after receipt of a traffic data volume report from the RLC layer, to process said data volume report and to then issue an acknowledgement message to the RLC layer. The method ensures that the RLC and MAC layers are synchronised with respect to traffic data processing. The MAC layer may be arranged to issue an acknowledgement to the RLC layer only where it determines from processing a data volume report that the RLC layer is not permitted to transmit data in a next or subsequent corresponding TTI. The present invention also concerns a process for data discard in a Radio Link Control (RLC) layer of a Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) wireless communications system such as a Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS). The process involves, responsive to the triggering of a data discard operation, determining whether the RLC layer is permitted to transmit data. Where it is determined that the RLC layer is not permitted to transmit data in a next or subsequent TTI, the method includes the step of informing the RLC layer that data is not required.

    • Methods and apparatus for use in reducing airlink congestion and processing time associated with ciphering information communicated between a wireless communication network and a mobile station are disclosed. From the standpoint of the mobile station, one illustrative method involves the steps of receiving a ciphering mode information message from a wireless network; identifying and processing valid radio bearer downlink ciphering activation time information in the ciphering mode information message when it is part of a security mode command message; and refraining from processing any valid radio bearer downlink ciphering activation time information in the ciphering mode information message when it is part of a message that is different from the security mode command message (i.e. when it is part of a radio network subsystem relocation procedure). The method may include the additional steps of producing valid radio bearer uplink ciphering activation time information for inclusion within a response message when the ciphering mode information message is part of the security mode command message; refraining from producing any valid radio bearer uplink ciphering activation time information when the ciphering mode information message is part of a message that is different from the security mode command message; and causing the response message to be sent to the wireless network.
