    • A method for mapping highlight colors to monochromatic textures is provided. It includes reading an input highlight color having a highlight color amount and a base color amount. The highlight color amount is measured and the base color amount is measured. A halftone cell (50) is defined having a plurality of output regions with corresponding output states. The output states of all the output regions are controlled in response to the measured base color amount. The output state of at least one but less than all the output regions is controlled in response to the measured highlight color amount such that the output state of at least one but less than all of the output regions is controlled by both the measured base color amount and the measured highlight color amount.

    • An apparatus for bi-directionally rendering an image includes a bi-directional printer (10) having an input (12) which receives data corresponding to the input image. A printhead (14), in accordance with the data, renders the image on a medium (M) in swaths as it passes horizontally over the medium (M) in opposing first and second directions. A medium advance device (16) advances the medium (M) vertically past the printhead (14) between horizontal passes of the printhead (14) in the first direction and horizontal passes of the printhead (14) in the second direction. Horizontal swaths of the image are segmented into a line of columns (20) such that the columns (20) are made up of vertical arrays of pixels. A detector circuit (18) detects for breaks (22) in each of the columns (20) of each swath. Transition regions are defined for columns (20) having no vertical breaks (22) therein. Rendered during the first printing pass are: (i) pixels which are above vertical breaks (22) in each column; (ii) pixels which are above transition regions in each column; and, (iii) a first portion of pixels located in each of the transition regions. Rendered on the reverse printing pass are: (i) pixels which are below vertical breaks (22) in each column; (ii) pixels which are below transition regions in each column; and, (iii) a second portion of pixels located in each of the transition regions.

    • Input device signals R.sub.s, G.sub.s, B.sub.s generated by an image input terminal are converted to colorimetric values R.sub.c, G.sub.c, B.sub.c. The colorimetric values processed by an image processing unit to generate address entries to a lookup table which stores a set of transform coefficients with which the R.sub.c, G.sub.c, B.sub.c values may be processed to convert them to C.sub.x, M.sub.x, Y.sub.x, K.sub.x colorant signals or any multi-dimensional output color space, which include but are not limited to CMYK or spectral data. Values which are not directly mapped from the table are determined using tetrahedral interpolation over a hexagonal lattice. The hexagonal lattice is formed by offsetting by a half unit every other row of one of its dimensions relative to another dimension. The offset provides closer packing of sample points that define more regular tetrahedrons to reduce relative interpolation errors. The packing also allows for easy lookup table access and simple tests to determine which tetrahedron contains a desired value.

    • A scheme for the color display of images on a device with a moderate sized color table first builds halftoned binary images for each of the three color components at a multiple of the display resolution. By summing bit values it then determines average values for display resolution pixels. The average values are then mapped to a color table. An example of the scheme uses the YES color model as the color coordinates. The colors are separated into luminance and chrominance components, allowing more weight to be given to the luminance from which the eye extracts most of the information. An example of the scheme yields 275 real colors for a 17.times.9 .times.9 grid of coordinate values, which is close to the size of a 256 entry color table. The scheme provides both anti-aliasing of solid areas, such as lines and text, and color halftoning to give the appearance of colors between those available from the color table. The color table may be constructed to include color coordinate transformations and gamma correction.

    • A method and system process a document having attached thereto a set of digital rights specifications, the digital rights specifications specifying constraints on the processing of the document. A workflow controller selects candidate devices, for processing the document, from a plurality of devices and determines, for each candidate device, that the device meets the digital rights specifications requirements. A set of devices are assigned to process the document from the set of devices that meet the digital rights specifications constraints. The workflow controller detects a failed device included in the assigned set of devices to process the document and determines potential candidate devices to replace the failed device. For each potential candidate device, it is determined if the potential candidate device meets the digital rights specifications requirements. A device that meets the digital rights specifications constraints is assigned to replace the failed device.
