    • A system and method for controlling peer-to-peer remote copy (PPRC) operations initiated from one or more host devices that desire to store data contents written to a first storage system to a second storage system over a communications link. The system enables receipt and generation of copy services commands from host devices and the determination of whether a received command pertains to a copy service over an established PPRC relationship for that particular customer to enable that customer to perform storage operations effecting data written to a first storage server having source volumes and stored in a remote second storage system having target volumes. The copy services command effecting data contents of source volumes and/or remote target volumes will be enabled if it is determined that said PPRC relationship is already established for that customer; and, prevented if the received copy services command does effect any volume not already in a copy services relationship.

    • When a primary data storage subsystem receives updates for local storage and mirroring at a counterpart secondary storage subsystem, the primary subsystem institutes device-specific, fairness-driven update blocking to avoid overrunning the primary subsystem's update buffer with updates destined for any one device. Broadly, the primary subsystem first receives update requests, then logs the updates in an update buffer, then stores the logged updates in primary storage, and finally copies the updates to the secondary storage subsystem. Each update request includes update data and also identifies a targeted logical device, physical device, or other subpart of primary storage. The primary subsystem maintains a counter or other update activity indicator that represents update activity for each storage subpart, such as the number of updates stored in the buffer. For each update request, the primary subsystem determines whether target subpart's update activity exceeds a prescribed level. If not, the update data is stored in primary storage. Otherwise, if the update activity is excessive, the primary subsystem rejects the update. Optionally, the primary subsystem may selectively override certain rejections to prevent completely blocking updates for that subpart.

    • A method and system are disclosed for enhanced efficiency of backup copying of designated datasets stored within a plurality of storage devices coupled to the data processing system via a storage subsystem control unit having subsystem memory therein. Application execution within the data processing system is temporarily suspended long enough to form a dataset logical-to-physical system address concordance to be utilized to administer copying of the designated dataset. Thereafter, application initiated updates to uncopied portions of the designated datasets are temporarily deferred until sidefiles of the affected portions of the designated datasets are written to subsystem memory. The updates are then written to the storage subsystem. Portions of the designated datasets are then accessed and copied from the storage subsystem on a scheduled or opportunistic basis utilizing selected data retrieval command sequences. A sidefile status query is appended to selected data retrieval command sequences and the presence of data within the subsystem memory is determined without the necessity of additional communications between the data processing system and the storage subsystem. The sidefiles are then accessed and copied. Copied portions of the designated datasets and sidefiles are then copied to alternate storage locations in a backup copy order defined by the address concordance.

    • A data storage system includes an outboard data transfer module that directs data transfer operations without requiring substantial host involvement. This subsystem includes a host computer, one or more digital data storage devices, one or more device controllers interposed between the host computer and the storage devices, and a outboard data manager coupled to the host and the device controllers. Data transfer operations are initiated when the outboard data manager receives a data transfer request from the host. The request identifies the type of operation, resulting target format, source data residing on one or more source devices, and one or more target devices. In response to this request, the outboard data manager retrieves a copy of the source data from the source device(s), formats target data according to host instruction, and then transmits the copy to the target device(s) for storage therein. Thus, source data is copied from source to target storage device(s) via the outboard data manager without burdening the host by routing data through it. Some exemplary data transfer operations include copy, migrate, recall, backup, restore, move, defragment, reorganize, and the like.
